Caleb Kelly is just another in the long list of "things that make you go hmmmmm" with a Mike Stoops coached defense. The kid was 5-star talent coming out of high school but has been a total flop. Is it that he's played out of position most of his time here, lack of coaching, talent, priorities,...who knows?
But here we are in the biggest game of the year just a couple weeks after FUMS was talking about potentially redshirting CC. I went back and watched the first quarter and Buzzy was a highlight of the defense and Kenneth Murray plays better with Buzzy in the game. The out of the blue as the second quarter starts FUMS/Kish replace Buzzy for Kelly.
Kelly plays the entire second quarter and looked completely lost and took himself out of the play at least 50% of the time. I think this had an effect on Murray's play in the 2nd as well. Kelly is one of most flat footed LB's I can remember at OU in a long time. On at least 25% of the plays he is flat footed and not at all ready for the ball to snap. On one play he was looking toward the sideline with his hands in the air as the ball snapped and play went for 15 yards.
If I'm Buzzy I'm totally pissed too and I don't blame him for walking away for a bit to show his displeasure.
The bottom line is this is a microcosm of a FUMS defense. It's total uncertainty in direction and plan. A guy who was to be redshirting replaces a highly active, and arguably the best player on our defense, for an entire quarter for no reason whatsoever.
