Kyler Murray Named Maxwell Award Player of the Week
NORMAN— University of Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray picked up his third national honor in the last 10 days when he was named the Maxwell Award Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Murray led the Sooners to a 37-27 win at Iowa State on Saturday by completing 21 of 29 pass attempts for a career-high 348 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He also ran for a team-high 77 yards in his first career road start. It was OU's 17th straight true road victory and its 26th overall win in its last 27 Big 12 games.
The redshirt junior from Allen, Texas, finished with a passing efficiency rating of 207.4 and averaged 12.0 yards per attempt and 16.6 yards per completion. He also engineered a fourth-quarter drive lasting 7:44 that ended in a game-sealing field goal by Austin Seibert with 2:51 remaining.
Murray teamed with junior receiver Marquise Brown for 189 yards through the air before halftime, helping Brown set a school record for receiving yards in a half.
Murray, who was named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week and the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week following his performance the previous Saturday against UCLA, has also won each of the last two Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. He is one of only four quarterbacks in the country who average at least 200 passing yards and 50 rushing yards per game this season. He leads the group in passing touchdowns (8) and total TDs (10).
The Maxwell Award is awarded annually to the nation's top player by the Maxwell Football Club. Baker Mayfield won the award last year, joining Jason White (2004) and Tommy McDonald (1956) as OU honorees.
No. 5/5 Oklahoma (3-0, 1-0 Big 12) welcomes Army West Point (2-1) to Norman on Saturday. It will mark the fourth meeting between the Sooners and Black Knights, and first since 1961. The game will start at 6 p.m. CT.
