Katy HS (Houston) opens their $72 million Stadium

I know it was 52 years ago, but the Astrodome only cost $31 Million.

A good high school stadium can be a money maker. And they won't just have their football stadium. It will host coaches' offices and all kinds of other athletics related resources. But $72 Million is a heap of money. I wonder how many schools there are in the ISD where Katy is located.

Actually , according to Wikipedia information the Astrodome cost $35 million dollars to build. Eagle Stadium in Allen cost $60 million. McKinney, TX ISD recently passed a $220 million bond. $70 million designated for building a new high school stadium. There are only three high schools in McKinney. I am a retired high school coach (30 years head basketball, 8 years assist football). In my opinion all of this is a incredilbly excessive waste of money. I wonder what the ordinary teacher thinks about this. Texas ranks 35th in teacher salaries. But the collection of dim wits in Austin don't care. Texas is and always has been football- everything else sucks hind tit to almighty football. And this is coming from a huge football fan. But keep it up Texas. Keep building those stadiums and developing that talent so the Sooners can come and get it.

It is just unbelievable that schools are building these kinds of stadiums. As a nation our priorities are so screwed up. I loved playing the game. Learned a lot about life. Still, in the end it is just a game.

If some of these kids parents spent as much time with their kids about education instead of football we would all be better off. I really don't like where all of this is going. And, I sure don't think we are going to better ourselves in the future.

An interesting column in today's paper: UNI was diverting $5mm/year from academics to sports, it raised some ire so they lowered it to $4mm. Football costs are about $3.3mm and nets about $1.1mm. Basketball costs $2.5mm and nets about $1.6mm. In the meantime tuition keeps going up and tenured Profs haven't gotten raises in 10 years. All this according to and documented by a long time Prof.

I know the numbers aren't close to what's earned or spent by OU but at some point Education should be paramount

8 schools in the ISD, and a new stadium was urgently needed.
Also, in the background you will see the "old" stadium. My understanding is they will utilize both stadiums. With 8 HS in the district, there will be games in both stadiums all weekend long.
I was raised in Tulsa and for the most part, all High Schools had their own stadiums. Down here, they typically build one stadium (sometimes two) for each district. That comes to about $8.75 Million per school.
