OU is 28-19-1 in bowl games. The tie was my soph year against Alabama, 24-24 in the Astro Bluebonnet bowl, in the first year of the Sooner wishbone. Bear Bryant was so impressed with the problems defending the wishbone, that the Crimson Tide switched to their version of the wishbone the following season and had an undefeated regular season before Nebraska pummelled them 38-6 in the NC game in the Orange Bowl.

The Sooners are 12-6 all time in the Orange Bowl. At least eight of the games were for the national title. A couple of others could have been had things gone better elsewhere.

Clemson is the only ACC team to be OU in a bowl game. The Sooners have also lost to present ACC teams Miami and Florida State once each in bowl games, but both were Independents at the time. Bud's teams beat Maryland twice in bowl games, when the Terps had great teams under former Sooner HC Jim Tatum. The Sooners also have wins over ACC team North Carolina and Virginia in bowl games. They also have a win over NC State in the 1946 Gator Bowl, though the Wolfpack was in the Southern Conference at the time. And they Sooners have a win over Syracuse in the 1959 Orange Bowl. Syracuse was Independent.

Five of OU's last six trips to the Orange Bowl, the national title was on the line, if you count the loss to Washington in 1984. Many thought that a convincing win might move the Sooners past BYU, who was undefeated, but hadn't played a team from the top 20 and beat a 6-5 Michigan team in their bowl game.

Against teams presently in the ACC, OU is 10-4 all time. Bud won four straight Orange Bowls in the 50's against teams presently in the ACC: Maryland twice, then Duke and Syracuse.
