GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Mike McCarthy offered an interesting job description for the newest member of the Green Bay Packers' coaching staff.

Jerry Montgomery won't coach a position, per se, but he has the title of defensive front assistant, which on the surface seems like a rather vague label on coordinator Dom Capers' side of the ball.

"Dom would really like to have someone work side by side with him, kind of a right-hand man in a sense," McCarthy said Thursday, when he announced several changes to his coaching staff.

Though it's not exactly clear what that job will entail, it's apparent it is something more than a low-level grunt, but something less than a defensive-coordinator-in-waiting designation.

"It's a great opportunity to learn from one of the best and figure out how I want to run my defense when I get the opportunity to be a defensive coordinator," Montgomery said.

The 35-year-old Montgomery recently completed his second season as the defensive line coach for the University of Oklahoma.

Last month, Sooners coach Bob Stoops promoted Montgomery to co-defensive coordinator. Other than a stint with the New Orleans Saints as a rookie defensive tackle during the 2002 training camp, this is Montgomery's first venture into the NFL.

"It's a chance to grow," Montgomery said. "I was a co-coordinator, and now I'm going to have the opportunity to work with one of the best coordinators in the history of the game and learn and develop, and it's a chance for me to get better as a coach."

Technically, Montgomery replaced Jason Simmons, who was moved to special-teams assistant under new coordinator Ron Zook. Last season, Simmons had the title of defensive/special teams assistant. He split his time with Capers and then-special-teams coach Shawn Slocum.

Montgomery, however, will work exclusively with the defense.

"It was an opportunity to add another defensive assistant," McCarthy said. "Going through the evaluation process and the interviews with the defensive staff and the areas where we felt like we can use another guy and improve as far as responsibilities."
