Obviously, The defensive performance last night was really disappointing. A situation like this has to have multiple problems: player effort, player ability, coaching, lack of confidence, no leaders on the defense, no self pride, and the high confidence of the opposition that they can move the ball against us.
Motivation and effort has to a largest part of the problem. And that is mostly on the players. Coaches can help the situation, but the real problem is on the player. The best performers in the real world and the best performers on the field are self motivated (see Baker Mayfield). It is obvious to me that not enough of our defensive players are motivated.
Are the coaches putting the defensive players in the best position to achieve success? - probably not. But The biggest part of defense is effort, intensity, hustle and want to. We seem to have not enough of that.

It appears this defense is degrading with time, not improving. There was a burst of energy when the coaching chance was made, but player effort has returned to level demonstrated in the Texas game. This was forecast by Teddy Lehman.
