With such a huge emphasis on December signing day, is the focus on getting top recruits too much for a HC to be an effective OC or DC?

Short answer is yes. My dream scenario is for him to hire Gary Patterson as defensive coordinator/assistant head coach and an offensive coordinator. I believe this would help the program and LR.
Yes! Riley needs to focus on being a HC and not just a coordinator.

LR has the pirate in him. Unfortunately we'll just have to settle for a few "showtime" moments to keep the faith alive I'm afraid. The committee is on to it. We are now Taco Tech, Washington St and Mississippi St.

I like Leach…..that is I like to watch him head coach other teams. I think he’s funny, but I wouldn’t hire anyone that ever coached defense for him. Ruffin McNeill and Alex Grinch have been enough for me.
People get too enamored with results and don't look at the underlying details. Look at all the praise that Jim Knowles (OSU D-Coord) is getting for how great the OSU defense is this year. And it is a great defense. But I saw a stat that showed that his returning defenders have over 400 starts in their combined career. That is an absolutely OBSURD number and not likely duplicatable. And without that type of experience, Knowles' defenses historically (both at OSU and Duke) have only been average to good but never great. So Knowles is going to get paid (at OSU or elsewhere) yet likely never again duplicate this years performance.
Question for the OU fans: Would you bring back Venerables if you could? Even as Clemson has sucked this year, his defense has been pretty solid.
With OU going to the SEC, I’d say hell yes, hire Brent. He has the reputation that can bring defensive talent to just about any major university. But there’s no way he would come back to Oklahoma as a DC.
Great point on original post about OSU having huge number of game experience...and agree with the assessment this may overstate how good the defense is. But regardless they are good. We all know a National Championship year takes everything falling right and special dynamics like a well seasoned defensive unit.
I would not hire Brent back and he wouldn't come. My issues with the progress of the team are inconsistencies with LR and Grinch's vision not working; it will only get worse in the SEC. Undersized and speed does not translate in a conference schedule like it might in a bowl/playoff game.
We need a new DC and LR needs to make some philosophical changes. His record in games after a bye week and playoff games is shitastic to say the least. This fact seems backasswards because a bye week or time for a bowl game should bring a team and game plan together...but this is just my opinion.
Riley makes 7.6 million a year. To have the defense we have at this time in his tenure is unacceptable imo. I don't want to hear about injuries etc. Bama or Clemson may have a "down" year on defense but I guarantee is not nearly as down as we've been under Riley as a whole. Embarrassing and he needs to be held accountable. We can't tackle worth a crap and that falls directly on our coaches and lack of discipline just like crappy Leach teams and Bob Stoops teams of his last 5-6 years as HC.
