vs the run:
TFLs:
vs the pass:
sacks:
Last year, OU was awful at giving up long rushing plays from scrimmage (8th) but 2nd in the conference in defending long passing plays. The 2017 defense was almost near this one in terms of sacks (they finished 4th) but wayyyyy down the ladder in TFLs (finished 8th).
Also interesting to note: last year OU had two players in the top 10 sack leaders for the conference (Obo, Kenneth Mann). This year they have three (Kenneth Murray, Curtis Bolton, and Mark Jackson) with Gallimore right at Jackson's heels. OU also has 7 of the top 42 sack leaders so far this year compared to only 3 last year.
So far, OU is a lot better at forcing negative plays in both the passing and running game. The down side is OU is getting beat bad in big passing plays. I think that will work itself out throughout the year and we'll be pretty happy with where the defense ends up, at least statistically.
