One of the keys to winning football programs of the future will be innovation (IMO). In business we call it strategic planning, but the idea is the same. What do we have to do to gain a sustainable competitive advantage in the all the important areas necessary for winning (recruiting, player evaluation, player development, strategy, game-planning, coaching, academic support, etc).
Ohio State recently held a one-day camp in Miami, FL (On the Florida International Campus) which attracted 450+ of the best high school talent in south Florida. They flew their whole staff (9+) including Urban Meyer in for the day. This of course amounts to a try-out camp. What a great high exposure recruiting concept. Michigan did the same thing in Tampa. I Iive in Florida and I can assure that Florida is loaded with top talent and this event made a big splash. Easy to see why Meyer is a big winner with this kind of groundbreaking innovation.
We (OU) have got to get much more innovative if we expect to remain relevant in future years. The winning secret (IMO) will be to do the right things first not follow the others. IMO we are basically followers. I hope you are listening Joe C. - this is not just about the coaching staff!
We have done a lot in the last couple of years to improve our program, but most things amount to catch-up activities following the leaders (IMO Baylor, OSU, TCU, KSU are the innovative leaders in the Big 12 - maybe that is why they are winning
