I'll probably catch hell from this from the far right orangebloods...
The events over the last week aren't a reflection of your university and it isn't fair a racist label gets stuck on OU if that happens. The irony is just like a good portion of your football team, one kid was from Texas.
The fact of the matter is that when you have rich, sheltered spoiled white kids in frats, stupid crap like this happens. Unfortunately, racism is alive and well as long as we have complete douche bags like this in society. These young people aren't sorry at all for their actions, they're only sorry they got caught. To try and say "we were taught these words" and blame it on the frat house grand poobaahs is a bullcrap. The gleefulness of their chant is something that a simple statement won't erase.
I give a lot of credit to Boren and his swift actions, history will judge him kindly for this. I also applaud the black students of OU, several times I've heard them say in news interviews that they don't feel the racist students should be expelled, but this is a teachable moment. I personally wanted them gone from the university, that they need to suffer the consequences of their narrow mindedness...maybe they're right, maybe showing them some humanity is what they really need.
UT has had similar issues with frats and racism. A number of months back, one frat had an illegal immigration themed party that featured Mexican overtones. In 2004, a statue of MLK was vandalized....so if any UT fan comes over here to throw stones, well they are on the top floor of a glass house.
I hope UT kicks your arse in 9 months....but even more I hope that we can kick the arse of racism in our schools and society.
