If L. Riley takes the South Carolina job, who would be a great OC?

With so many coaching vacancies around the nation, I'm sure many OCs will have a nice selection of offers to choose.

I saw Kirby Smart may try to snag Tyson first for Georgia, but Tyson Helton of WKU has done a nice job as OC.

I will make this prediction. IF Riley takes the South Carolina job, his team will eventually become a very good offensive squad, but fail to become a defensive team good enough to win championships....at least within the near future. I don't see how Lincoln could have the contacts to assemble a staff for 2016 like Bob did in 1999. He is too young and hasn't had time to have the contacts that are ready to move, IMO. On the other hand, if he stays with Bob Stoops for a couple more years, it will pay big dividends one day. If Riley is as smart as advertised, he should know how important defense is. Even the great Steve Spurrier finally accepted the fact that a great offense can't win championships without a Bob Stoops-type DC. Could Riley persuade a guy like that to move to SC with him today. Probably not. But in a couple of years of locating, cultivating, and recruiting someone that can put together a better than average defense, he will be better prepared and more likely to win the tough games. I would hate to see him turn out like Mike Leach or that guy in Lubbock...or even like Spurrier, who coached a lot of great offensive teams only to lose against better teams that had good offenses and defenses for so many years. Riley can do better than South Carolina sooner than he thinks.

Sports talk radio in ATL said Spurrier is lobbying for Auburn's DC, Will Muschamp, to be the next South Carolina HC. I don't think they'll go with a guy who has not head experience as a HC.

How much better ? It's a 4-5 million a year job...in the SEC with a rabid fan base and a supportive administration. Forbes says is the 17th richest and spends 9th overall in athletic money. The SEC Network and no pro competition. The only game in town, Alabama couldn't pry Spurrier from South Carolina so they went after Saban. The only thing lacking is a real winning tradition. I think you underestimate these other programs and what they can offer.

Mike Stoops took the Arizona job but the next year he could have had the LSU gig. Big mistake!
Riley - wait for a better offer than South Carolina and win us the NC now!!!!

If we win a NC this year, I bet OU gives Riley a big fat pay raise to keep him here. His stock will rise considerably and the poachers will come from everywhere!

I suppose if Riley is interested in money rather than winning championships, USC may be okay. Spurrier didn't make $4M until 2014. South Carolina has only won two conference championships. One in 1933 and an ACC title in in 1969. In 2010 they won the SEC East Division. Basically USC has been a middle of the pack school. USC is only a better job than Arizona because of its conference. Holtz nor Spurrier were not that successful, so Riley isn't likely to go there having never been a HC, probably not yet ready to assemble a really good staff, and win by playing offensive football only. He has a great opportunity at OU to learn from one of the best, network with experience, talented assistant coaches and gain needed experience in a great system. Of course, if he wants the money now, go for it, but it probably won't be anywhere near $4M you mentioned.

He isnt going anywhere soon...he freaked that Stoops called and offered him the OC job. He's a smart kid....he'll learn all he can, build his reputation and go to a great school!

Well, shit. That would suck. Surely this couldn't happen to Bob again. Leach was really good but Lincoln Riley has got way more upside, IMO. If he does go to South Carolina, he could return one day. So we have that.

Well in 2000, we basically kept running Leach's offense, since we had the QB that ran his offense and a fellow offensive coach that stepped up and ran the same offense a little more conservatively behind an excellent running back.

If he bolts, I think Bedenbaugh could become Mangino. Mayfield becomes Heupel. And Perine becomes Q Griffin.

Coach Riley - listen please!

In a year or two, you will get a better offer for a "blue blood program" somewhere! (LSU could be looking for a new coach in another year or two!!!)

Coach Leach jumped at Tech and did okay, but he could have done much better and now has ended up at Washington State! You don't want to coach at some place like that!

South Carolina could get you paid, but don't you want to go somewhere you can win!!!!
In any case, wherever you go, we'll be rooting you on!
(Unless you play us, of course!)
