Here We Go, Again...Calum Sutherland, Kicker, Arrested...

I personally don't feel like getting drunk in public is a positive thing. I would like to see more self control from our players, but hopefully it is a lesson learned before something more serious happened.

If he played for any other team, it probably wouldn't get a Headline...It came into my Email as 'Breaking News'...

However, Surely all of the players have been drilled on this sort of behavior, so we have that...

Its possible to be arrested for public intox even if you were not drinking or intoxicated. Happened to me once when I was 21.
Was at a party and just got there with a friend that drove us there. Cops showed up about 10 mins after we got there and made everyone leave.
As I was in the Apartment Complex parking lot looking for my ride a cop told me to come here, told me I was told to leave and then arrested me and a few others that were doing the same thing, looking for our rides out of there.
Charged with Public Intox and had not even had a drink nor was given any type of sobriety test.

Of course mine happened back in the late 80's, cops back then could arrest you for looking at them funny. :D
When I was at OU in the late 1960's, I was chased by a car with 4-5 thugs inside south of the campus on Imhoff Road. I tried to get to my dorm at Alley House, but they pulled in next to me and tried to break the driver's side window in. I threw the car in reverse and drove to the campus police station nearby on Jenkins Ave. and they drove on by while yelling that I was a coward. When inside the police station, the cops asked me if they were "long hairs". When I answered no, they told me to just return to my dorm. (Glad I had a crew cut then !)

I was a long hair back then when I got pinched. Probably why. :)

One of the many great things about Riley is that he's run a really clean ship.

It's been important to me, especially after all the trouble with Mixon.

I'm not saying we need to make a big deal about this, but I don't think you let it slide either.

I totally agree. I hate the college kids will be college kids excuse. There has to be some accountability

Agree......and here I go again being "old school"......
Make curfews for all players and let them know as early as the recruiting process that drugs, alcohol, fighting and beating up women will result in getting kicked out of school. Let them know that in exchange for acting like mature men and setting examples for kids, they will get a free education, celebrity status and a possible NFL career. Have the designated team captains monitor and mentor the team, especially the freshmen. (Isn't that what they should do already ?)
I have no idea on how....or if....Riley addresses this misdeed by Sutherland, but aside from Riley having to deal with the distraction and the program getting a slight PR dent, Sutherland's possible punishment could potentially cost OU on the playing field. Given OU's uncertainty in the kicking game this year, this could be a problem. I thought Sutherland was coming along after a slow start vs. Houston.

Unfortunately standards and expectations aren't what they used to be

Sounds to me like they were the cowards - 5 vs. 1.

Whether it's deserving or not, he put himself into a situation that allowed a P.I. to occur. Therefore he should be punished and suffer the consequences. He's very young and appears to not be able to handle himself when/where alcohol is around. I suggest some of alcohol counseling and a shit ton of stair running. Then call it a day.

Agree.
Something like this can be (and should be) a lesson learned for a 20 year and it can work in his favor if he learns from it. I think Riley will handle it properly when all is said and done.

but he is a high profile athlete for a major college program

To quote Lincoln Riley: "....these guys (players) live in the public eye".

I am guessing the poster was suggesting Sutherland is (just) a player for a major college football program. Bad decision: no question. Horrible, life changing decision: depends if Sutherland is that good.
