Sigh...
Football is a game of angles and aggressiveness. However most often the game is won or lost pre-snap with alignment and assignment. We are THEE worst presnap defense in America if you ask me.
I think I've argued this for going on 6yrs now and it blows my mind. Pre-snap we line up soft and consistently pedal out in the secondary. It blows my mind. Well it also blows my mind that we trot out 5'9 178 dbs EVERY YEAR.
Anyway...
1. Tackling is optional at OU. But ima take it one step further I'll state that our guys arent successful tackling bcuz of alignment and assignment let me explain - your defense is designed inside out. Meaning your middle defenders should ALWAYS tackle inside out. Backers - attack inside leg
Safeties - attack inside leg
Stay square, cut down the angle and force the ball carrier to your help. It's not brain surgery.
DEs - attack outside in
OLBs - attack outside leg
CBs - attack outside leg
Stay square, cut down the angel and force the ball carrier to your help. Again. not brain surgery. Our guys play with no rules and because of that we consistently give up big plays in the flats, over the middle...every where.
2. Brooks and Sutton are better matchups vs ut defense. They have their backers back to give them time to diagnose the plays. We counter with quickness until they get tired and then use sermon.
3. Oline? Its officially time to be concerned. They have dramatically underachieved. Ford kills us the second drive trying to be a tough guy unnecessarily. If we cant run the ball we lose multiple games.
4. Kyler is human but still our difference maker. It still kills me when he slides a yard short of first downs but I dont have 5mill waiting on me.
5. Has Perkins been in on defense. Kid is a difference maker and plays the zone read well.
Bonus: this game isnt over. Someone on our team needs to make a play and say my sac is bigger than yours. It pisses me off that ut looks like the tougher team the past decade. They were no where close to as tough as us. We need to steal that away from them again. And that starts on defense.
