Guess it could always be worse...

What our win looked like today.

We could be Clemson. They have a big nothing burger tonight. They really do not look like a top 5 team.

I know its day 1 but the only team that stood out to me above everyone else was Alabama per the usual. Lot of games left to play so some more will emerge but Alabama just keeps chugging along every year. Saban has spoiled their fans rotten.

Yep it could be worse. Probably best to get the many issues exposed today and corrected. The sooner the better. Riley won't change, it works for him more times than not so unless what he does isn't working game in and game out he will do what he does. If he hasn't learned by now to keep the foot on the gas he won't ever learn until the losses start piling up and thats what I am afraid is what it will take. The SEC may teach him some hard lessons in that regard. Hopefully not but until he sees it as a problem he won't change it.

The mentality of the team and work ethic starts at the top. To me Riley going into his shell is a quit attitude and mentality, Coaches want their players to play hard for the full game so you should Coach Hard for a full game as well. Have you ever seen Saban pop a vein when an opponent score late in a game when he is up by 40 pts? Ever see how he reacts to a player making a stupid mistake late in a game when the game is won and very handily I might add? Yep, pops a vein. He always demands excellence no matter the score or if the game is almost over and in the bag.
Demand better of yourself and the team, no excuses and lead by example. The players have to notice what he does if its so painfully obvious to the fans. Everywhere on Social Media today and also here people are calling Riley soft when it comes to the killer instinct. If he doesn't have it how can he expect it of his team?
I am also tired of the branding, Speed D, OUDNA etc etc, stop with the hype and go out and prove it, prove you actually want to be the best. Shut your mouths, show up, beat em and leave em.

I saw Leachs team Miss St. almost lost today to Louisiana Tech and came back from 21 down in 12 mins to win by one point. This is what he said. Reminded me of our game today except we didn't have to fight bqck to win but rather hold on for dear life as Riley loves to do for some reason.

Early in the fourth quarter, with his team down 20 points at home to a non-Power 5 opponent, Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach may have heard the lyrics to an old Talking Heads song sponging around in his brain, wondering, how did we get here?

Then the Bulldogs snapped in gear, and, in true Leach fashion, scored 21 points in 12 minutes to beat Louisiana Tech 35-34 in a season opener.

"I basically said we tried every way known to man to lose it, just for fun let's try something different," Leach said. "Let's go ahead and do our job because we've got nothing to lose. And off we went."
He went on to say,
"We act like since we play in some big conference, they have to come in here and roll over for us," Leach said. "And they're not cooperating. We just have to keep pushing."

Does OU already have that problem even though we are not playing in the SEC this year? I know they have acted that way before, almost like because we are OU we just expect teams to throw up their hands and admire our past glory. Doesn't work that way, they should know that everyone that steps on the field with them will want a piece of that history and tradition not because of you but what others have accomplished, you haven't done anything yet so go out there and get it.

I often wonder what Riley says to his team when he takes the foot off the gas and lets teams back in it. "Ok guys I only put enough gas in the tank for one half but we are going to have to coast on in on fumes in the 2nd half. Defense just do your best to get their offense off the field as we won't be able to help you much with rest from being on the field too long. We can still reach our main goal of winning the Big 12 again with a couple of losses, possibly 3. So lets get out there and hang on for dear life!" Break!

I don't know, I am just as befuddled as everyone else and cannot wrap my mind around it. Maybe today was a huge wake up call for everyone on the staff and players too. If not then how could it not be and why do we have to have wake up calls every damn season?

Damn, 67. You’d be lucky to fit that post on a CVS receipt.

Nothing of National Championship caliber has ever come out of Texas Tech, I’ve been hoping Riley would prove that wrong. Yesterday’s win was a win but so freaking disappointing as a fan. We’ve spent all off-season hearing all about the Speed D, Grinch has all his players etc but dang if we didn’t come out and look identical to a Mike Stoops defense to begin the game.

I will say some of the secondary play looked better at times but I’m still confused why we don’t see OU CB’s play more aggressive on short passes that they know are coming. Bama and Clemson db’s challenge every pass. It’s aggravating

Our O Line was not good for most of the game. Rattler was not progressing through his reads properly. He miss wide open receivers in favor of moving out of the pocket and running for short gains. He was definitely off target more often than usual. I am not going to write this team off just yet. Our defense overran plays and gave up yards unnecessarily. This can be fixed. The O Line can be fixed. Rattler still has a boy's head on a man's shoulders. We know he has all the skills and capabilities to be great, we have seen them before. They came out a bit off tune with the INT on the first possession. There was some very raw talent on display in our secondary. Lawrence is good, Grimes is good. We have youth, lack of experience and high ambitions all colliding yesterday. The coaches have a window of opportunity now to get this guys marching to the same drummer. Boomer Sooner.

Saban diverted Jace McClellen and Camar Wheatley away from OU in consecutive years after they broke their commitments. I believe the loss of at least one of these players could cost OU dearly in 2021.
The view is always better looking ahead rather than behind. You are getting cynical in your aged years.

I will say one thing in defense of the defense (haha).

In previous years, we've seen opposing receivers running wide wide open in the secondary. Opposing running backs braking off 40 yard runs. Lots and lots of missed tackles. No turnovers forced by our defense.

I don't think we saw this yesterday. Instead, the opposing offense grinded out several drives, including converting 4 of 6 fourth downs. They had several good looking play designs, and they had a quarterback who was more fearless than he was smart.

So while giving up 35 at home to a mid-major type program is not acceptable, I'm still holding out a sliver of hope that the defense can rebound from this performance. Our tackling overall was pretty good, we forced some turnovers, and if we can figure out how to cover the other team's tight end, we can get off the field more often.

Give Grinch a chance to coach these guys up, and to correct some of the mistakes we saw yesterday. I think he can do it.

Agree with many things you typed. Clayton Thomas, Billy Bowman, and Key Lawrence all looked good. I thought the defense did their job in the 2nd quarter to make the game a blowout; the offense failed to cash in on short field via turnovers. Rattler looked rough. LR failed to get the team ready at half to come out and put the collective boot on the throat. I was very disappointed overall, but the 2nd half play was the last taste in my football mouth.

Very thankful we have two more non conference games to get it turned around and I think we can. LR needs to get it going.

Excellent post 67

I sure miss the Switzer days. Your supposed to step in your opponents neck from start to end……..not be Karen apologizing and asking if your “ok”
This team will mirror its leader……a SJW.

I agree and I’m certainly not writing us off, we’ll have a good year I guess I was just disappointed as were most of us in yesterday’s effort. Rattler will absolutely be ok, he was last year and I think our receivers give him a much better chance this year. Rattler wanted to start off with a bang on his first pass and it didn’t work out, he was just a tad short but he’s still a pretty dang good passer imo. He just has to consistently make good choices.

next game we’ll probably see him come out throwing short to intermediate passes to start off the game.

Saban’s teams are the epitome of the Jimmy’s vs the Joe’s comparisons no doubt

Lets not act like this is something new with OU under Riley and Stoops. How many times has this happened in the last ten years? They act like they can just coast the entire second half and still win.

Agree 1000%, and we saw a multiple new players getting reps on the defensive side of the ball. Young guys who I think will get better as the season goes on.

That's the thing that I like about Grinch, is that in his scheme individual players seem to get better year over year, and even game by game, which did not happen under Stoops (players actually seemed to regress somehow under Stoops which was weird).

But we'll see happens on that side of the ball in the next few games.

On offense I think it's kind of same thing. Keeping the oline healthy, and letting bedenbough (sp?) get them to gel as year progresses. That's realistic.

Riley will get Rattler sorted out (for heaven's sake, it's just the kid's 2nd year starting), and will figure out how best to use all of our talented WRs.

But RB is still kind of an unknown. Part of it is up to the oline. But I may have over-estimated Brooks ability. He was running behind great lines in 18 and 19, and that may have exaggerated his performance. I was a little worried by what I saw from him and the Gray kid yesterday. We'll see what happens.

lol I would get some of it out post it and then have a few more thoughts edit it and add some more and so on and so on. Its hard to shut a great mind off when the creative juices start flowing lol. Nah I was just pissed off, had to get it all out. The win was so ugly it actually felt like a loss.

Riley has a season of play in front of him. Plenty of time for the needed surgeries to fix ugly. The real poll doesn't even start for anorther 5 or 6 weeks. Anything else is pure speculation and window dressing.
I get the poll situation. But identifying clear issues from yesterday's game is not pure speculation or window dressing. If the game was a 3 - 4 touchdown difference (which it should have been) I could see the reaching.

I've gone back and watched parts of the game and from my perspective we can certainly fix most issues and play alot cleaner. In us fans defense, and after what we'd heard all off season we were tuning in expecting to see a version of the 92'-93' Dallas Cowboys defense but instead got the 2018 Mike Stoops defense to start the game.

I will say this I believe if Mike Stoops was coaching yesterday our D would have totally collapsed so at least we can feel good about that.

Just curious as to why you think it should have been a 21 to 28 pt difference? This Sooner team is untested, unproven and pre-season ranked on nothing but speculation based on returning players for multiple Div 1 teams and their schedules.

In the 3rd week of Dec, this game will be considered a W and nothing more.

I cannot speak for everyone but its the Pattern every season that bothers me.

For you OU history buffs out there, our last two NC seasons started with unimpressive wins that had everybody crying. At the end of the year, all they count is how many Ws you have after each of the lines on the schedule. If we improve and win out, it's trophy time. If we don't, we don't. Either way, all of the "chicken little" stuff after one game seems pretty silly to me.

I don't think you can compare these guys to the 85 team that started out poorly against Minnesota. That defense had so many studs as did the offense. Not to mention we had the greatest wishbone QB in our history

I agree be interesting what happens to Alabama once Saban leaves the Finebaum show should be interesting once that happens and Bama struggles.
