Grinch Presser

He's saying exactly the right things, much the same as Bob Stoops did in 1999. However, talk is cheap and, as they say in Missouri, "show me."

I agree. I really don't care what any coach or player says these days. I wanna see it on the field

My fav of Mike Stoops after Ohio State beat us badly in Norman a few yrs ago. Didn't he say they play a different style of offense than we do in the Big 12 as to why the defense could not stop them? Hell he couldn't stop the ones in the Big 12 he faced every year lol. So glad that clown is gone.

We had nothing but excuses from the last guy so I am glad to at least hear Grinch say, No Excuses. We shall see.

True. He always said we were built to stop big 12 defenses........wellllll

I'm not convinced that the defensive recruits of recent years are deficient or overrated. I believe they need to be given good coaching and motivation....which have been deficient in recent years.
I'm not sure if Grinch's task will be trying "to make more with less" because I think there is talent already on the roster and incoming talent as well.
We saw in 1999 what good coaching can do to talent that's been sleep walking under poor coaching under Blake. It happened quickly.
No one who watched the 1998 team could have seen a national championship two years later with most of the core talent left over from Blake's travesty.

Then we better get a DL “consultant” with a clue how to coach up this new era of the Sooners Defense. Time to make more with less...
Thibs is a young coach. If Grinch didn't see talent in him, I'd expect he'd already be gone. Sometimes you need an actual leader with a vision to bring out your full potential.

Totally agree and Thibs has shown flashes
Flashes of what? Virtual ineptness? HIs unit has crippled this team, imho. He may be a decent recruiter but his coaching ability seems hollow. Grinch definitely has his work cut out for him.

We have to get much stronger on pass rush side to AVOID the opponent getting into the red zone...over...and over again. It was a stinging stat that we were dead last in red zone defense...and pathetically low on 3rd down defense. That was crippling to any signs of progress.

With Gallimore and Perkins in perfect position. Yea it’s in your opinion. Unless you played the position, don’t assess any further.

Beyond our first 2 games (FAU and UCLA), our lack of an average pass rush prevented us from taking our game to the next level for this year and last. We've made inexperienced opposing QB's look like the second coming of Tom Brady with our DL weakness.

Your inability, imho, to engage in reality in this respect is not my fault. No DL experience here but I can see.

When you have a 3 man front and do not do any kind of stunting, or blitzing its kinda hard to get pressure on the QB there are 5 sometimes 6 guys blocking 3. The lack of pressure wasnt because of talent, it was due to poor game planning and scheme.

In reality we were fine in 4-3. This is what I was saying. It wasn’t the dlinemen it was linebackers down the stretch specifically Kenneth Murray. Defensive lineman filled the gaps the linebackers didn’t. Would frequently not shed blocks or hit the wrong gaps.

Our new D coaches are going to help but the people who have played college and professional football along with retired coaches are indicating that OU’s defense will grow much stronger. One of the reasons why is the amount of DL depth that OU now has to work with that will be improving with in the off season but also with each game.

You know another thing I’ve heard is Lincoln will be personally involved with every DL we recruit. He knows how important it is.

No excuses is exactly what we need. You need a coach to be willing to know when you sucked and players sucked and they take or make any excuses for it. Stoops and Ruffin were bad about this. In regards to Thibs he comes from a 1 gap train of thought, so this should be more beneficial for him hopefully. He has shown to be a good recruiter, so him staying made sense. Now Ruffin, is my concern. Hopefully him not having to lead a team will be better and hopefully he stays out of any way so on the D. I think going back to a 1 gap will help him as well, but is biggest drawback is his recruiting.

You are very correct....Riley has said next to the QB room that the DL is the most important position group in football. OU’s football roster is now full of young DL. Some are bound to become big difference makers in due time.
