Grammy Award winner and Oklahoma native Joe Diffie dies of complications from coronavirus

Oklahoma native and Grammy Award-winning country music legend Joe Diffie died Sunday from complications of coronavirus, his publicist has announced.

He was 61.

His family asks for respect for their privacy at this time, according to the news release from Diffie's publicist.

As previously reported, Diffie announced through his publicist Friday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.

"I am under the care of medical professionals and currently receiving treatment. My family and I are asking for privacy at this time. We want to remind the public and all my fans to be vigilant, cautious and careful during this pandemic,”

A Tulsa native who attended Velma-Alma High School, Diffie's hits included “John Deere Green,” “Third Rock From The Sun,” “If The Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets),” “New Way (To Light Up An Old Flame),” “Pickup Man,” “Bigger Than The Beatles,” "Home," “Ships That Don’t Come In,” “Honky Tonk Attitude,” “Prop Me Up Beside The Jukebox,” “So Help Me Girl,” “Texas Size Heartache,” “A Night To Remember,” “It’s Always Somethin’” and more.

As one of the most successful singer-songwriters of the 1990s, Diffie also penned hits for artists like Tim McGraw, Conway Twitty, and Jo Dee Messina. His career that included 13 albums and more than 20 Top 10 hits.

The Oklahoma Music Hall of Famer also was a member of the Grand Ole Opry for more than 25 years.

Diffie has continued to have an influence on the current generation of country music stars. He was celebrated in hit song homages from Jason Aldean (“1994”) to Chris Young (“Raised On Country”).

Recently, he released "Joe, Joe, Joe Diffie!," his first ever vinyl LP.
