Just a bit outside the Metroplex...
I've never been a big fan of using recruiting rankings and how many stars a player has to forecast whether OUs recruiting classes are legit or not. No doubt there are countless examples of 2star or 3star kids becoming incredible players. But last night it was pretty obvious OU was beaten with superior talent. So in a debate about recruiting on the pay board a guy posted this article. It was a really interesting read. And makes me take a step back and maybe force myself to reevaluate my views on recruiting rankings and just how important recruiting 4 and 5 star players are.

Hard to argue with this. As Sooner fans, we've watched Bill Snyder make chicken salad out of chicken feathers for a long time. We've also watched Okie State and Tech be competitive with second and third tier recruits. Those make for nice stories and decent teams. If you want to be nationally elite, with legitimate NC hopes, you need to have almost exclusively four and five star recruiting classes. As I said in a post earlier today, if OU wants to be championship timber, Bob and Co. will have to up their game significantly on the recruiting trail.

Won't happen; most kids who are 4 and 5 star players in the Dline or Oline just are flat out hard to get interested in playing in this conference. These style offenses just don't develop players that well on both sides of the ball. A lot of those kids have pro football aspirations. The 4 and 5 star linebackers are in the same boat, although I think we are improving a little here with some kids coming up in the next couple of years. There are no vacancies in the NFL for the Eric Strikers of the college football world.

Power running spread offense, like Auburn, Florida or the Ohio State and Clemson are the way to go, IF you want a title.

Great posts guys.

And Forney, I think what you say holds alot of truth when you compare what BrentV recruited here at OU, and what kind of defensive talent he has brought in at Clemson. Though it could be other factors as well in that both programs are just different situations. But it's a very striking difference when you compare the two. Maybe one of the factors is like you said it's just THAT much more difficult to get those 5* DL and LBs to come to OU.
