Cadets beat the Falcons in a 17-14 nail biter. First time since 1978 Army has beaten AF back to back.

Afterwards, USAFA showed a complete lack of class by starting a fight and essentially boycotting the traditional postgame alma mater singing by Army. The Air Force team is a reflection of their head coach and Troy Calhoun is pretty much a turd.

When OU scheduled Army a few years ago many were disappointed. Now , it’s OU’s biggest win....so far.

I was never disappointed and in fact started scheduling my trip to attend that game. Told the wife I would be going to that game and enjoyed it very much.

59, you are one of those who has an appreciation of college football history, like me. I wish I had been there and I'm still pissed that the game was swept under the carpet by the generation-x brain trusts of the networks.

WP, did you hear that the Air Force mascot, a 22 year old falcon named Aurora, suffered injuries to both wings when a "prank" by some West Pointers went wrong. The bird may have to be euthanized given her age. I am sure that there was no intent to harm Aurora, but this is really a sad event. It may explain the near rumble at the end of the game.

Yes, I saw that and it's indeed unfortunate. I don't know if it was the reason for Air Force's postgame stupidity or not but I do know it wasn't an issue until AF lost the game. Army and Navy have been pulling "mascot pranks" on each other for over a century but Air Force has been immune to those until now. As far as Army, this comes under the heading of "good initiative--bad judgment." I do hope the Falcon doesn't have to be euthanized because they are truly magnificent birds.

That said, I still think the post-game incident was just AF being sore losers. My initial post omitted the fact that at least one AF player flipped off the Army team as well as stadium security. The historical reality is that the AF guys have often tended to the punkish side but, since they've beaten us so frequently, we couldn't say very much.

I believe the heart of the matter is that Air Force knows they're the third wheel of service academy football. They'll never have the tradition and prestige of Army/Navy so they believe they can compensate by winning the CIC Trophy. When that doesn't happen, you get what you saw yesterday. The bottom line is that they can't deal with being beaten by a team they've historically dominated.

Good read. Thanks.
Army has always been my second favorite team and I’ve always believed that the academic requirements at West Point exceed those of the other two academies, especially since the cadets at West Point are much more likely to serve in harm’s way.
I’ve never seen any confrontation at an academy game until yesterday. I hope cooler heads prevail next year when Army goes to Colorado Springs.

As a historical note, during the Army-Navy game of my plebe year (1972) Navy pranked us pretty good. The game was played at ancient JFK Stadium in Philadelphia and President Nixon was supposed to attend. After the pre-game march ons by both schools, the Presidential Limousine pulled up along the track that surrounded the field in front of the Army section. The West Point cadets stood at attention and saluted anticipating that Nixon would exit the limousine. Well, the car door opens and out comes none other than Bill the Goat--Navy's mascot. Boy, did we feel dumb LOL.

Turns out Nixon was a no-show but Army won the game 23-15 and took home the first ever CIC trophy. I'll not mention the fact that my last three years were miserable as the Mids trounced us badly.
