I am seeing some of the more pessimistic OU fans saying Gabriel is much closer to Brock Purdy than Baker Mayfield, but most seem to have him somewhere in between the two on a scale. When I think Purdy I think turnover machine and awful decision maker so I looked up some of the numbers and added Mayfield's in as well (they are insane).
Purdy 81 TDs- 33 INTs- 2.45 TD/INT ratio, 19 Fumbles (11 lost) in 48 games
Gabriel 70 TDs- 14 INTs- 5.0 TD/INT ratio, 11 Fumbles (4 lost) in 25 games
Mayfield 119 TDs- 21 INTs- 5.67 TD/INT ratio, couldn't find good fumble numbers, but don't remember him being too bad there
While I think saying anyone is going to be Baker Mayfield is an insane and unrealistic comparison, based purely on the numbers he definitely seems closer to the Mayfield side of things than the Purdy side. I know the knocks are he gambles, similar to both players, and his release isn't great. Anyone who has dug into him more have a better explanation for this comp? Or is it mostly just guys being pessimistic?
Caleb is almost certainly a better player than Gabriel and anyone who can't admit that is delusional, and I am not expecting Gabriel to be Mayfield 2.0, but especially with his familiarity with the Lebby offense I think top 5-10 QB in CFB and at least in the Heisman discussion is reasonable. He will certainly have the narrative for it.
