Family Ties

I saw that Miner team play Tulsa in a non-conference game at the old Fairgrounds Pavilion. The racial undertone vividly accounted for in the movie simply did not manifest itself in that game. Tulsa was a member of the Mo. Valley, a conference that had been playing A.A. players as far back as the great Bradley Brave teams of the early 50's led by Bobby Joe Mason. Growing up in Tulsa I was fortunate to be able to see many great MVC players in person including McCoy McClemore (Drake), Chet Walker ( Bradley), West Unseld (L'ville), Dave Stallworth (Wichita State), & of course the greatest player i ever saw in person, Oscar Robertson. More than one Valley team started at least 4 black players back then, we'll before Haskins put the Miner team together. OCU had some great teams back then and they were playing native Americans as well. I loved James "weasel" Ware.
