Personally I think there should be one standard to claiming championships and to be fair things should be separated into categories.

Historic Period -- Pre-Integration of blacks
Media Period -- Integration to BCS
BCS Period -- Start of BCS until the beginning of Playoffs
Modern Period - Playoffs
