Oklahoma has been in hot pursuit of UMASS transfer CB Josh Wallace, but as of yesterday afternoon the feeling in Norman was that Michigan was going to be the outcome when Wallace announced. You saw that to be the case this morning, with the Wolverines picking up Wallace’ commitment.

A source didn’t seem too deterred by that, though. The source said, “(OU) is okay. Really, (OU) feels there are some guys that can change the depth and talent,” the source said about the corner spots. “Gentry [Williams] is healthy and has added some solid weight to go with his elite speed. There are some high expectations for him. Same with Jacobe [Johnson]. He’s taken to things early on since arriving in the last week or so. Really has shown his length and ability during skills & drills practices in the evenings. And Josiah [Wagoner] has continued to grow in his understanding of things and is adding good weight. He is just building off his really solid spring, so there is some young dudes that are going to hopefully help (OU).”

All isn’t roses. The Sooners need to find a player opposite of Woodi Washington, and from what I am told, there is going to be quite a battle with the likes of Gentry, Jacobe, Jayden Rowe, Kani Walker, Makari Vickers, and others.

If they don’t find consistency there, it will leave vulnerabilities on one side, like in 2022, before CJ Coldon took over 3/5 of the way through the season. By then, the damage was done — though OU had plenty of other inadequacies last season to go along with one side of the field being more open than others.

Sooners’ staffers feel the talent is there. There are a lot of people around the program that feel the depth situation is twenty times better than last season, but on-field growth needs to be seen before most will be a believer around Sooner Nation.

Still, growth is taking place. Recruiting has improved, as has talent evaluations. Now the development part is what’s left, and when that gets going things should start to show on the field with young talent. Even as early as this season.

We know you all hope that’s the case.
