*** As we have been alluding and hinting at for nearly a month now, the Sooners were looking for a QB in the portal after losing Gereral Booty and Jacob Switzer to the transfer portal. We first hinted on this on the board and the Youtube Live by saying the Sooners would likely be looking for a PWO type of QB to fulfill a little more depth in that room.
That search went pretty quick after OU and former Choctaw and OKPreps three-star QB Steele Wasel entered the portal and the Sooners quickly made contact with Wasel, who was previously at Akron. Wasel was recruited at Oregon by then Ducks' OC (now the Akron head coach ) Joe Moorehead. That relationship spurred Wasel's eventual signing with the Zips.
After redshirting in 2023, Wasel had a big spring and was looking to make a move toward the starting lineup. However, as with most transfers, things took place that made Wasel and his family feel a fresh start was needed.
For the last few weeks, the Sooners and Wasel have been looking to iron out the red tape that takes place with transfers, and Friday evening Wasel tweeted out a cryptic photo of Baker Mayfield by his locker room and sitting with infamous 'Pretenders' sign that Oklahoma took with them during their 2017 run to the CFB Playoffs.
Sources close to Wasel told OUinsider that it was "official" and that Wasel would moving in today (Saturday) with "another player." Source also added, "OU told [Steele] to be there and ready to go on June 2nd."
This is a really, really good get for a PWO spot. Wasel is athletic, big and has a strong arm. He also plays with the same type of flare and gunslinger mentality that the other OU QB's play with, so that fit in itself will be very good the Sooners and Wasel.
This get in the portal is another in a long line of PWO players that Brent Venables has added to fortify the roster. Not just a PWO's, but players that have interest from other programs in the P5 and G5 leve, but the Sooners have been able to add to their rosters without using a scholarship.
Wasel joins Jackson Arnold, Casey Thompson, Michael Hawkins, and Brendan Zurbrugg in the Sooners' QB room.
