I spoke to 2024 Rivals100 wide receiver, Terry Bussey last night for a few minutes. We obviously spoke about his latest unofficial visit to OU this past weekend and where things stood in his recruitment. A recruitment that is getting close to coming to an end with a September 28th decision date already in place.

Not shocking or surprising at all, Bussey was very complementary of the Sooners and their offense after. The four-star wide receiver told OUInsider, “ [Oklahoma and their offense] getting the ball to everybody on several occasions, and the offense being so explosive is very appealing to me,” Bussey said. “The stadium atmosphere was really cool, too. Was loud until OU pulled away. I really enjoyed it.”

Bussey has two more visits set up before he announces his decision later this month. Those two visits are Alabama on September 8th and LSU on September 22nd.

Now, obviously, that leaves September 15th open for another visit. Unfortunately for the Sooners, and Sooners WR coach Emmett Jones, Oklahoma is going to be out of town that weekend playing at Tulsa.

There’s obviously a possibility that Bussey doesn’t take a visit anywhere that weekend, and he didn’t say he had any plans to do so, but I think most people feel he will at least attempt to get back to College Station before a decision is made. And with A&M the perceived leader, and Bussey’s decision date coming up soon, it, honestly, would be fairly surprising if he didn’t make a return trip there before deciding — at least as things stand now.

Still, regardless of how much of a run Oklahoma seems to be making, or how well Emmett Jones has been recruiting Bussey up to this point, there just seems to be a few things working against the Sooners as well.

To me, the biggest deterrent for Oklahoma seems to be the fact that they already have five wide receivers committed. Ironically, that number of WR’s committed is also why Bussey is the only remaining WR the Sooners would take at this point in the process. At least in addition to what they have already gotten to commit to them.

That brings us to the Sooners’ chances with Bussey down the stretch. Can OU make a late push? It seems they are doing just that, but I still wouldn’t hold my breathe if I am you all, with A&M still perceived the longtime leader for the elite Timpson (TX) ATH.

Look, I don’t think OU has conceded anything like that. Actually, far from it. The Sooners are putting up a fight and they did get Bussey back on campus. That visit last weekend was big for Oklahoma to take another swing at the elite Top 50 overall player in the 2024 class. However, I just think the shorter drive to A&M, and Bussey not even remembering how many times he’s visited the Aggies (with it being so many times, according to him) has given Jimbo Fisher and A&M an edge that will be hard for most to overcome — including OU at this point.

We will continue to cover this recruitment until it’s over, but as of today, it will be a surprise if A&M isn’t the pick. Even with a valiant effort from the OU staff.

*** Quick four-star DL Nigel Smith note:

This isn’t hard to read at this point, but I continue to really like where OU stands with the big-time Rivals100 Melissa (TX) DL.

From just speaking to sources that are dialed in with that recruitment, this past weekend, I’ve yet to hear anything that makes me feel the Sooners should be on edge about this one. At least not yet. One source even said, “Unless something takes place last second, it seems (the Sooners) are in a very good spot with [Nigel] Smith,” the source said of the Sooners’ standing with the 82nd overall player in 2024. “Todd [Bates] has built quite the bond with (Nigel Smith) and his family over the last two years. That bond with Nigel’s family has put (OU) in the position they are right now.”

Look, I will never write off A&M in any DL recruitment. You do that at your own peril. That said, even with A&M trying to make a late push, I like my FC to OU. Smith fits the Sooners’ culture in a multitude of ways, and according to sources, he sees that himself.

Lastly, I’ll be on-hand to see where Smith commits and partake in Melissa’s Stadium grand opening. Should be an entertaining Friday night, either way.

*** More notes to come.
