Spoke to a source today that knows the four-star RB Caden Durham and his family fairly well. This source has spoken to Durham’s family as recent as a few days ago and the source told me, “He didn’t want to leave Norman. He loved it and had so much fun with his boys. But OU is also where he’s been looking to play his whole life.”
I asked about LSU and where they stand, and the source noted, “It’s track. That’s the draw and they have to use track because if you’re a running back looking to go to the league, you have to look at a guy like [Demarco] Murray and how he was successful and knows what it takes,” the source said. “But when you look at track it’s like OU and running backs, right? LSU is elite at track. OU is not. Just stating a fact. Caden would be a 9.99 guy in the 100 if he tweaked some things in his technique and that is what LSU is telling him they can do for him, along with helping him improve in other areas in track. So that’s the draw to [LSU], but he loves OU and they will be hard to beat with football being his love and family’s love as well.”
Another interesting part is the four-star Taylor Tatum equation. Could that hold off Durham from eventually choosing Oklahoma, if that’s what he is looking to do? The source didn’t think so, and said, “From what I have heard, there is a lot of OU wanting to use them like [Jovantae] Barnes and [Gavin] Sawchuk or like [Eric] Gray and Barnes. Like the two RB system they have used for nearly a decade already. That has some appeal to both, from what I have been told. So, I don’t think that is going to be the factor that would push Durham elsewhere. I think it’s appealing to him.”
My Take: I don’t think this recruitment is done by any stretch — no matter how good of a position some feel the Sooners are right now.
Obviously, Oklahoma really wants to have Durham in the ‘24 class. Sources also tell me that Durham is the RB LSU wants, and if they don’t land him they would be content not taking one at all in their ‘24 class as well.
With LSU pushing Durham’s OV back to the season, it’s almost as if they are testing to see if he will pull the trigger or not this summer. Some feel he will, while others think he may wait a bit.
Regardless, OU set the standard for Durham at the ChampU BBQ and LSU is working to make up ground. That said, the longer the Durham waits, the more LSU becomes a viable contender again and the more things look up in the air.
I also think there is a world LSU works to use Taylor Tatum against OU, assuming Tatum eventually chooses the Sooners. Especially with how deep the Sooners’ room is already.
Still, as of today, the Sooners look to be in pole position and Coach Murray and company are hoping that a decision is near for the four-star RB.
Other teams he has recently visited are UTSA, A&M and a few others.
