As you have seen on X (Twitter), former Texas and Nebraska QB Casey Thompson is entering the portal (my tweet linked below). This is something Charles Thompson discussed with me at the 5A state title game and said they were leaning on transferring from FAU then.
Over the last few weeks they have been deliberating on whether they truly wanted to go that route, and even turned down a possibility to be drafted by the XFL in their draft. A few of their teams showed strong interest in Thompson as their QB.
In the end, the thought was that they wanted to get healthy and go through the pro day at whatever school they end up, and on top of that, they are also looking at being a PWO and not taking a scholarship.
So, how does this fit into OU and how is this relevant for our board? Well, there is hope on the Thompson side, and there has been some buzz from sources I have spoke with in other places, that OU would be open to a PWO QB to come in and help with depth. Especially one with experience and just a year left on their eligibility. So, with that said, the Sooners are once again a team to watch here, as is Nebraska and possibly a Big 12 program or two.
Thompson and OU make sense this time around. You get a PWO QB that isn’t looking to start, unless he somehow beat out Jackson Arnold (he is the starter next year and that’s understood by everyone), and one of your backups would have over 5,000 yards passing and 50+ TDs heading into the SEC.
At the end of the day, Thompson won’t be cleared with his knee until after spring ball, but would be able to practice outside of doing live team drills. Also, Thompson has played in a handful of systems and is a quick learner with the goal of being a coach when his time is up.
I say all of that to note the reality that OU is a team I think should be on watch here, but it’s not a certainty just yet. We will have more once it’s official with Thomson entering portal and if things start to move.
