What a wild Saturday in the Big 12. None of the conference’s top four teams won. Baylor is in that group, but the Bears were blessed to be off. They host West Virginia on Thursday night.

The other three top dogs all lost. OU at Kansas State. Texas at TCU. Iowa State at home to OSU.

Which means it’s hard to identify the top dogs. The conference is a jumbled mess. Ranking the teams is a difficult endeavor.

  • 6. TCU (4-3, 2-2): The Horned Frogs have a tough remaining schedule – OU, Baylor and OSU. But they looked revived against Texas.

  • 7. Texas (5-3, 3-2): The Longhorns looked like an elite team not long ago, with only seven-point losses to LSU and OU. But now UT has squeaked past Kansas and lost to TCU.

    8. Texas Tech (3-5, 1-4): Losing to Kansas is bad. Losing in the way the Red Raiders did – Fred Brown style – was worse. The Red Raiders were trending upward, but now Tech is like Texas. Its only good win is over OSU.

    9. West Virginia (3-4, 1-3): The Mountaineers could cap a crazy week in the Big 12 by upsetting Baylor on Thursday night. Wouldn’t be the craziest thing to happen.

    10. Kansas (3-5, 1-4): If the Jayhawks want to play what-if, imagine if KU had held off Texas a week ago instead of losing 50-48. Kansas would be 4-4.

A few questions of what if that don't matter now:
1. The OU player that touched the ball @ 9.5 yards looked to have been shoved into the touch by a KSU player. Any difference ?
2. If we had been awarded the ball and scored would we have played for O/T and tried for the D stop or have gone for 2 with little to no time left ?
Opinions ?
By the way the AP still has us at 5 as do a few others but 9 in the Coaches

AP dropped us to 10.

It might just be we are not as good as we hoped. I know personally that I was so desperate for good defense I might have let that cloud my impartiality.

I agree. Also, the B12 just doesn’t have enough above average teams this year. OU and maybe Baylor, but too early to really know. With the exception of Clemson, the ACC may be even less talented.

Not as good as I had hoped but about what I expected. Still a lot of football left to get better but after seeing what I saw Saturday I just don't think this team is playoff worthy right now nor will be at seasons end.
I doubt we even make the Big 12 CCG. This team reminds me of the teams that got manhandled by Notre Dame and TOSU a few yrs ago but this one got manhandled by lol Kansas State.
I believe we will lose one more this season as well.
Not trying to be a debbie downer just being realistic.

I’d say 10 is a good spot for OU. If we win out and win another B12, then we should creep back up to 5 and get a chance to play in a bowl we can win this year.

According to this site if OU wins out we have a 89% shot of still making the playoffs as LSU, Alabama,Penn St, and Oh St can’t all win out.

The problem is it doesn’t take into account the human bias element which would likely knock that down to around 5% since we are likely to see two SEC teams in the selection process.

For what it’s worth ( which is absolutely nothing really) Murray in his post game interview told the truth and basically said “ We stunk it up today and didn’t do our job. It’s up to us to fix it and we will because we have no margin of error now”. Not his exact words but it is what he was saying in a nutshell. I like that he didn’t make excuses.

During Rileys press conference you could see the disappointment on his face as I think he realizes the CFP may now be a lost chance. I hope this anger of losing translates into solid focus the rest of the way for the players and a nice Bowl win over either Alabama, LSU, UF or Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

I think we can all agree anything less than another B12 title will translate into a disappointing season because frankly we are a spoiled fanbase.

It was one fail followed by another. Now we have to avoid one big pitfall in Waco in a couple weeks. Playoff dreams are dashed. I really can’t say that K-State did not earn that victory...they prepared well. It just should have been clear to Riley that he needed to use his brilliant offensive mind to win the game...when the defense had a 2018 relapse.

I don’t see OU getting in when competing against one loss teams like Ohio State, LSU, Alabama or Penn State. Then there’s Clemson, Oregon. But that’s only the way I would vote based on the season thus far. We’ll see what happens.

The defense was somewhat fools gold because honestly we hadn’t played anybody very good. We have since found out that Texas is not any good. It’s time to move on with a different mindset and see things for what they are.
Agree.
Establishing a championship caliber defense for a team like Oklahoma will take a few years, and I think Riley knew this when he hired Grinch.....and he had to expect games like Saturday's game to happen along the way to developing a defense that can get OU to an Alabama level.
We all got teased by the Texas game before Texas showed they were not nearly an elite team. I want to believe that the defensive meltdown vs Kansas State will serve Riley and Grinch well in the long run as a lesson learned.......perhaps a case of "losing a battle, so you can win a war".

Win out and in the playoffs.....and in a year when Bama is lacking their usual defense and Tua has bad ankle, Clemson is diminished, LSU is way overated, t OSU looks like the only stiff competion......

This will get a very lukewarm 'perhaps' from me because of my post above; chances are either not likely or slim (Whitman) as in no way...

Exactly correct and this is why I stated they don’t include the human element which knocks us down to about 5%.

The only way OU gets in now is to run the table and hope that the 2nd SEC team has at least 2 losses. This is why I am hoping LSU can run the table and Bama also loses to Auburn. Then we still have another roadblock that involves Oh St and the Penn St loser as only one loss for them can also make it very slim for OU to get in.

Hell giving us a 5% chance may be even stretching it.

I don’t believe LSU is overrated at all. That defense is getting better each week and they have a great offense. Gotta give credit to teams who deserve it.

Ohio St I can’t stand but that is a damn good team and only Penn St now stands in its way of running the table unless they pull a Oklahoma. I agree Clemson and Bama are beatable but they have done what our team hasn’t done to remain undefeated.

I do believe that LSU beats Bama and hoping PSU beats TOSU just to see the meltdown by a couple of main board rivals posters and you know who I am talking about Z.

The program better make defense a priority or it will never change. Recruit, recruit , recruit. IMO that’s the only way to turn it around.

I agree but if you were recruited by OU and Clemson or Alabama, which school would you sign with if you were a stud defender? No current history at OU. It can turnaround but it’s going to take years before we grab more than one top defensive stud a season.

Says it all, Oklabama.
OU has to build a reputation that won't happen quickly.
While there had been some improvement prior to the Kansas State game, that improvement now seems to have hit a brick wall....and it seems to me OU is back to square one when I consider the weak schedule so far that's made the defense appear better than it really is. All Kansas State did is expose this.
So what I want to see happen is for the team to win the Big 12 championship and win a bowl game, then recruit like hell for good defensive talent.

LSU beat TexASS to earn their current ranking, TCU beat TexASS where is TCU ranked...?..

Beating Auburn is no big deal ! Auburn earned their ranking by being gifted a win from Oregon, Auburn QB is a 50% passer when playing bad pass defense...

LSU will lose to Bama by 21 or more....everything is up in the air other that tOSU and Clemson
