Crazy thought, isn't it? Or is it?
One thing we know: Last year, OU made the playoffs, but lost a heartbreaker to Georgia. That offense will go down as perhaps the best in college football history. Certainly as good as any I've seen
This year's OU offense? Could it be as good? Different QB for sure. Both are ultra talented. One won a Heisman and Murray is likely to finish in the top two this year. Regardless, the two offenses are CLOSE.
Where there might be a real difference is the defense. No longer is this year's squad shackled with incompetent, clueless, Mike Stoops. OU has simplified its defense. There no longer is a guy in charge who just yells at them. There is a difference. We can't kid ourselves, though. This is not a good defense. Against good offenses, it will give up points. But can it be good enough to get stops, challenge its opponent, and perhaps get a few key turnovers in big games?
There's still a long, challenging road ahead for OU just to get in the playoffs. They have to win their conference and they can't afford any slip ups. But, if they do manage to win out, their chances for getting in the playoffs are probably really good.
And then?
Alabama looks like the heavy favorite. Their QB is also amazing. Their defense, obviously truly superior. Who knows how things will shake out. But if OU manages to get in the playoffs, they might actually have a better shot of winning it all with a Mike Stoopsless DC.
Also, as a side note: think OU's recruiting will soon be off the charts. As Rattler perfectly stated, "I love this offense." Who wouldn't? And does anyone doubt Riley is going to get a DC who will be a monster recruiter? He will. And that's when the rest of college football should be afraid.
