Between Christmas and the Rose Bowl, we saw "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MO." with Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell. We went on the day we got about 9 inches of snow here in GA. It had snowed about two inches (they were predicting 1-3 inches) and we thought it was going to end soon, so we went to the theater. About halfway through, the lights came up and a sheepish movie employee told the 8 or 9 of us in the theater that the snow had increased and was going to get worse. So they sent us home with free passes to come back at a later time. That was two weeks ago and we haven't been back to see how it ends!
But, back to the movie. This is a dark comedy/drama about a woman whose daughter was raped and killed and after 9 months, she goes after the small town Chief of Police for not solving the crime. Of the 45 mins. to an hour we saw, it was fantastic! Woody Harrelson is the beleaguered Chief who is trying his best to do his job and keep this woman under control before she divides the town, but he is beset with enormous personal problems. Sam Rockwell is a mean-spirited, Mama's boy Deputy who takes delight in terrorizing those he feels are "less than" and has his sights on Harrelson's position of power in the community. Frances McDormand is the fed-up, hard-as-nails, straight talking, at-wits-end mother who is trying to light a fire under the police to solve the crime, but is using flamethrower instead of a match.
Although the movie is about a horrible crime and people dealing with tragic personal issues, it does have some moments of levity that make it a true dark comedy. I have to admit that I felt guilty for laughing out loud a couple of times because of the theme of the movie. Most of the laughs were the result of biting witticisms and comments from McDormand directed at those who cross her path. But as soon as you laugh, the movie slaps you back to the seriousness of the issue and the effect it has on not just on the mother, but everyone in the town.
I will make every attempt to go back and see it this weekend, as I'm sure I won't be disappointed in the ending. The movie has also received several awards and nominations at the Golden Globes as best movie and best actor for Frances McDormand. Although I've not seen it through, so far I'd give in 4 out of 5 Sooner Schooners.
