I've seen Woodard just light it up for a half and then it often doesn't stay that way. This isn't over. Lon has done some subtle things. Their big guy freshman is a load. But he has made several mental mistakes, especially on defense. Plus there were about three times that they set him up for the lob, which came when he wasn't looking.
I think we know that the Aggies can come back. But I like how this is going. For the most part, this crew is really letting the players play and OUr guys tend to be really good when that's the case. When they can just play and not worry about touch fouls, they can really be good. If Lattin hadn't picked up that second foul on a reach in, I'd feel really good about the second half.
And James has done a couple of great things besides making two threes. There were three times in the first half when he had inside position on one of their big guys on the defensive end and he must be really strong, because he went up and got the rebound when it looked like their taller guy he was boxing out would likely get a high up board. And when he does, the transition gets going quickly.
This ain't over. But it's really going well. Once we saw how they were playing us, we put the pedal to the metal. Lon's game plan has some subtle stuff that is taking advantage of some weaknesses in A&M's game, especially the big guy on defense. They drew him out with a big man who set a screen high. He followed the screener out to help out, and it opened up the back door about three times. We have four or five baskets inside on really good passes for dunks or big guy lay ins.
The biggest difference in the game so far is OU's defensive rotation on helps. It's be very precise. A&M's has not been. We triple team the big guy inside early and they made a few threes, which led to a flurry of tries that didn't go.
I would love for OUr seniors to be rewarded with a regional final, and then more. This is one of the best games I've seen OU play this season, at least for a half. A&M is 10-1 in their last 11 games, with the only loss in OT to Kentucky in their conference tourney final. They're a very solid, senior laden team. OU is making them look pretty average so far.
