I will start by saying that I am completely fine if we get a new DC at the end of this season if that is what Coach Riley and Joe C. decide is best for the program. I would suppose it will depend largely on how things go from here.

That said, there can be no denying that a huge part of the reason we lost yesterday is because of Murray’s miscues which were mostly unforced errors and came at pivotal moments (see Ryan Abner’s article in today’s Daily Oklahoman).

The first came early in the game after a holding penalty and interception set UT up for an easy score. Luckily our defense was able to force a FG and we were able to tie it up with a FG on the ensuing possession.

The second came on the possession following UT’s TD to go up 17-10. The 1st 2 plays of our drive resulted in 2 huge losses when Murray went down after trying to scramble. We ended up punting deep in our own territory and giving the ball right back to a hot UT offense.

The game was all about playing catch-up from that point on. Just as it seemed like we might have turned the tide in the 3rd quarter after a defensive stop Murray made a terrible turnover that led to UT going back up by 2 scores.

I think Murray was otherwise great and his performance in the 4th quarter was simply brilliant. But it came when we were down by 21 points and our amazing comeback effort came up short as we ran out of time.

Anyone who knows anything about this game knows it is a total FNG crapshoot due to the extreme hype and pageantry of the storied rivalry. As just one example, Baker lost his first game against UT and crawled away with 2 close wins in his 2nd 2 games.

Because of the emotion of the game (which is akin to a huge bowl game) it comes down to who can handle the big stage and avoid making costly mistakes. Unfortunately for us, that person was UT’s QB yesterday.

UT appears to be back and had an excellent gameplan yesterday that benefited greatly from our rookie QB’s rookie mistakes. Only time will tell but I think Herman has this program back on track and, as crazy as it sounds, that is a good thing for us.

We need UT to be strong because it is hugely important for our conference and should also push us to be better. It’s been nice to own UT for the better part of the 21st Century but nothing lasts forever.

We learned a lot about our team yesterday with their valiant comeback effort. We are going to learn a lot about more about our team over the remainder of this season.

Recent OU teams have rallied from far worse losses than that to have stellar seasons. This one deserves our unwavering support and let’s hope they can do the same.
