Stop me if you've heard this before. Buddy Hield has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week following his performances against Texas Tech and at LSU. It marks Hield’s fourth such conference honor this season and the sixth of his career.
In two victories last week, Hield averaged 31.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steal in 36.0 minutes. He shot .588 (20-34) from the field, .565 (13-23) from 3-point range and .900 (9-10) from the foul line for the No. 1 Sooners (18-2, 6-2 Big 12).
At home versus Texas Tech on Tuesday, Hield poured in 30 points on 9 of 12 shooting, including 5 of 8 from long distance. He added six rebounds, three assists and one steal in 34 total minutes.
On Saturday at LSU in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, the senior tallied a game-high 32 points on 11 of 22 shooting, including an 8 of 15 effort from downtown (seven of those treys came in the second half). The senior added seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in 38 total minutes against the Tigers.
Hield, who leads the Big 12 in scoring at 26.2 points per game (ranks second in the country), has now scored at least 30 points in eight games this season. It’s the most 30-point games by a Sooner in a season since Jeff Webster during the 1993-94 campaign (10). Saturday at LSU marked Hield’s 12th game this year of at least 25 points.
The Bahamas native now ranks first nationally with his 4.35 3-pointers per game and has made at least five treys in a game nine times this year. Hield has shot at least 50 percent from 3-point range in each of the last eight games (48 for 87; .552) and in 13 of the last 14 outings.
