Stoops has now been here for 16 years of OU football. We've now got a pretty big sample size of him and as so I would like to get everyone's 3 Greatest Triumphs and 3 Greatest Failures. And no you can't choose the obvious triumph of the 2000 national title. Let's get that one outa the way! Lol
And yes I obviously had way too lazy of a Sunday. Haha
Also if you would...try and look back and think of when stoops was first hired...what were your expectations for him? Did he meet them? Did he exceed them? Or were you expecting more from the Florida Defensive coordinator that was named head coach back in 99? Anyway here are mine:
#1 Greatest Triumph:
Dominating Texas-I love the big 12 titles. I love the bowl wins. But there was something about that run from 200-04 where him kicking the shit outa Texas every year in a MULTITUDE of embarrassing ways that just made it so fun in October. Whether it be a 65-13 thrashing. Or a 12-0 blanking. Or a 14-3 superman jumping...there was something about stoops taking them balless short horns to the woodshed.
#2 Greatest Triumph:
Hey Nebraska...we're back-
Down 14-0 I was a little worried that maybe our luck had ran out. But when we stormed back with 31 straight points in one of the more dominating performances defensively that I've seen by a stoops team it was truly a great feat. And I don't think our presence of being back could have been spelled out any more emphatically then that day on Owen field.
#3 Greatest Triumph:
Heisman Winners- I've loved watching us win big 12 titles...I've loved watching us round out the BCS bowl wins with that win against bama...I've loved seeing us play in 3 other national titles. But none of these end with statues outside of Memorial Stadium. Those 2 heisman seasons for our QBs was truly amazing. Both leading to national title appearances and both were so fun to watch from Sammy B flipping against OSU to J White stomping a mud hole in A&M. It was just truly a fun run to watch as our guys brought home the most ballyhooed individual trophy in all of sports.
----------------------------------
Dun dun duuuuuuuh...the bad. Honestly after the 1st one it gets kinda hard because stoops has brought so much to the program.
#1 Greatest Failure-
3 Appearances 2 Chances-
It's hard to say what 2004 was because it was such a curb stomping from USC and then we find out they handed Reggie an escalade for his long commute from dorms to cla...who are we kidding he didn't go to class. Maybe that seasons different if USC doesn't have Reggie and he didn't go off the last game of the season to save their bacon before the NC and we play auburn in the NC instead. But man we KNOOOOW he missed out on 2 great chances to wrap up 2 more national titles against LSU and Florida. Now I understand some will jump on me and say "dude how in the hell are national title appearances failures?" Ok ok let me explain- the season and appearances themselves aren't the failures. The GAMES solely are the failures because of the opportunities that were there for turning OU from ..."now didn't they win one back in early 2000s?" To "Ole stoops has made OU the greatest college football program in the US...hands down."
#2 Greatest Failure
Nepotism-I know this is a sore subject...but bob stoops and his nostalgic hard-headedness(not a word) to let people over stay their welcome really did(has) caused the program to become stale. I loved him bringing Mike back and it honestly made me giddy because I thought "Ok our ability to play defense literally disappeared after he left before the 2003 big 12 title game so maybe he will come back(yes the irony if nostalgia) and make us into what we were before!! Just like old times!" But sadly he has struggled. In no way am I saying he should fire mike...but I do think it has oozed over into not wanting to fire mikes counter part...cough cough... Heupel wore out his welcome and was a better QB coach then OC...and I honestly think if stoops wouldn't have jumped the fun and put him at OC and instead hired/promoted someone else maybe Heupel is still with us today. It was just too early with too little experience (IMO). The one good thing about this failure is stoops has now shown he will sh!t can even his most beloved QB whom helped him to his REAL greatest triumph...progress?
#3 Greatest Failure
BCS bowl woes- when people mention OU and BCS bowls everyone has 2 thoughts "hey they are the only team to have won every one." And then "Hey oh bob has gotten his teeth knocked in on a few of those." It all started with that USC game. Gosh that started a bad trend. Then came the BSU crazy game dam H&L and Statue of Liberty (I'll never go to see the real one just because of this). That game really started to make OU Look bad on a national scale...but THEEEN WVU just curb stomped us the next year...cementing us as a team who COULD NOT WIN a BCS game though we won 2 prior to that. 08 wasn't as bad because it was a great game that turned out bad for us. But I like to think stoops has turned us in the right direction now that we've won 2 straight BCS games and maybe now people will think more of the good then the bad.
Stoops expectations-i loved the hire and I had great expectations but I could never of dreamed stoops would return us to such high standards that we now have. In no way shape or form has stoops disappointed me in how he's brought us back to being at the pinnacle of being a top 5 college football program in the country.
