Alright I know this topic has been beat to death but I have some questions for people who know better than I about Diaco’s role in the defense this year.
I have ceded that Diaco is not calling the plays. That is Mike Stoops our DC. It’s silly to think otherwise when Diaco literally can’t do that.
But. Things like alignment, blitz packages, etc. look MUCH different. How often last year did we see wide splits on the DL and players lined up with their man but 8 yards off of him? All the time. They’re lining up differently on the DL this year and actually look like a 3-4 defense (to the untrained eye). The secondary might be doing some of the same things but the front seven looks totally different.
I remember seeing a front in the UCLA game with the nose (I think it was Gallimore) offset a little from the two DEs, like he wasn’t up right in front of the center but back a little bit. I don’t think I saw anything like that all year last year, it was always that frog stance and it was always those huge splits.
The bltizing is different too. I can’t remember how often they blitzed the MLBs last year but Curtis Bolton has made hay with it this year. I always hated how OU’s pressure package was basically Obo/Striker off the edge or a cat blitz before 2018.
So I guess what I’m getting at is Mike Stoops is calling the plays. But this isn’t his defense. This isn’t necessarily the same 3-4 he was using last year. And Diaco has had a lot to do with that. That correct?
