Bob Diaco - From a Nebraska Fan

So take this for what it's worth.

He was our DC last year and he is a very odd cat. Press conferences with him are interesting as he doesn't have a personality that makes him comfortable talking to reporters.

Didn't have respect from the players as an x's and o's stand point.

Scheme was high school level. Played basically a soft cover 3 in fear of giving up big plays.

He also hired in "tackling consultants" to come in and teach tackling.

Anyway for a guy who was the assistant coach of the year it was very underwhelming.

Not too many here were happy with OU making a spot for him, either. I hope it's just an interim thing and they do a full-blown search while he keeps the seat warm. Nothing about that guy impresses me.

But hey, I'm just a spoiled fan that thinks I'm entitled to a good defense.

OU has something NU doesn’t. Talent.

As a Nebraska fan, I can say most of what OP said is true. But talent is also needed. We did not have the personel or talent to be good on defense.

He had some good defenses at ND and Cincinnati with Brian Kelly.

Our defense is SLIGHTLY better this season. That is with a new DC.

We were bad under Pelini’s last season on defense. We were worse under Banker. We were terrible under Diaco on defense. And we are bad under Chinander on defense.

It is talent.

Exactly.

What has Nebraska done on defense since Diaco left?

Oh, I think they are .... what ?

Without a doubt the entitled will give McNeil and Diaco about three possessions before they are screaming for their heads.

Just look at what has gone on in DC the last four months. It is the same kind of people who are up in arms screaming at anyone they see as the enemy. There is no difference between the protesters in DC than those who can't shut their mouth with coaches or anyone else for that matter.

Unless NcNeil and Diaco can perform a miraculous job in a couple of weeks then the same ole tired and entitled people will be after them with their hatchets.

I'm glad that Mike Stoops is gone. It is better for both Mike and OU as well as Lincoln Riley. But, there are those who will never be satisfied with anything less than perfection.

It is really sad.

I think it was pretty obvious that a change was needed. The numbers don't lie, and it wasn't about just one game. BUT, I have no idea who they should bring in. I just hope it is someone who can recruit, not only players but the right assistants. I'm not hoping for someone who is perfect because that guy doesn't exist. I am hoping for someone that can teach our guys how to stay in position, tackle, turn and look for the ball in coverage, and not be near the bottom of the barrel in every defensive category. An average defense would have won the Sugar Bowl and the RRS. I'd like someone who doesn't blame the offense for scoring so fast for the amount of time the D stays on the field. I'd like a guy who holds himself and the players accountable for getting of the field by making some stops.

Again, I don't know who that guy is. I'll trust that Lincoln will find him. And I couldn't agree more that this move is better for everyone. But I also think it would have been much better for Mike had he arranged an exit at the end of last season. It would have made it much easier for him to land another gig. Lastly, there is no doubt in my mind that Mike did everything he knew to do and that he was 100% committed to fixing things, but the game is a lot different than it was when he was coaching the D in the early 2000s. Maybe the offenses evolved much quicker than he did. I wish him well.

Honestly, I don't know anyone that upon learning of Mike's firing didn't do a little fist pump in the air. So, both of us are in the vast majority of OU fans when it comes to Mike.

Also, I don't know the right coach. I wouldn't recommend any prospective DC as I just don't know them.

I think you are correct in your thoughts about the contemporary offenses did bypass Mike's ability to defend them. I also believe both Bob and Mike got behind the times when it came to recruiting these kids. Riley is way better equipped for modern football recruiting.

My problem is having the same ole stuff about coaches being thrown out constantly by fans who don't know a thing about coaching in today's environment being the current state of college football.

I just hope that OU fans will give Ruffin and Bob a chance to fix some of the problems with our defense. On that I will also suggest that the rules coaches work under today aren't nearly as liberal as in the past. The NCAA rules will allow Ruffin and Bob "one day a week" to have a physical practice. One day per week ... no coach will fix the problems we have when it comes to tackling.

I just don't want to see these boards piled high and deep with the bitching and complaining.

I don't know if these guys will be better or not. I don't know if the next permanent DC is one of these guys. I do know that, under Mike, we had the same crap for 5 years. If we end up with the same crap now, at least we tried to do something (and will try something new in the future), rather than leave a bid situation in place and expect something better, year after year after year.
Try something new. If it doesn't work, try something else.

On the National boards, ND, Neb and Uconn fans have nothing but bad things to say about Diaco

God thing hes not the DC, hes a position coach. In sure he's pretty good when all you have to do is focus on one position. Theres a reason he became a DC and a head coach.

Diaco is one strange bird. Go watch some of his post game pressers from last year when he was at Nebraska.

Thanks but he has a chance to coach defense on a team with an exceptional offense. Night and day from your situation at Nebraska. Hopefully Frost can correct your situation but nobody would excel as defensive coordination a NU today. Your getting embarrassed every week.

Good luck but you'll never be a top team in the big x. No recruiting like you had in the Big XII.

I like that Diaco is going to coach the inside linebackers. I am not a fan of Kish at all. Hopefully Kish will be gone at the end of the year as well.

One thing is for sure, Ruffin and Diaco cannot do any worse than what we've seen the last several years so I'm excited about what the Sooners can accomplish for the remainder of 2018, especially with LR/KM and offense.

Man wish you guys would stop with bashing the very ones you say have been bashing Mike Stoops. It's every bit as tiring hearing it! IMO
