I guess we were in 4th place last week, but we moved up at least a little. Just one game out in the loss column. I guess we get to pull for OSU and Texas when they play KState.

Interesting schedule this weekend, November 7.

11:00 West Virginia at Texas. Loser is out of CCG possibilities. ABC

2:30 Kansas at Oklahoma Originally, was told ESPN2. But apparently now on ESPN.

2:30 Texas Tech at TCU The battle for 9th place FOX Sports 1

3:00 Oklahoma State at Kansas State Both teams coming off their first conference loss FOX

6:00 Baylor at Iowa State Would love a Baylor win, but no expectations FOX Sports 1

The following week, six conference teams are off.

OU-KU got bumped up to ESPN when the ABC spot (Wisky-Purdue) came open when that game got cancelled by Covid. Houston-Cincy (originally the ESPN game) was moved up to ABC, while Arizona @ Utah took our place on ESPN 2.

Back to back, to back, to back, to back and quite possibly, another to back coming.

These conference titles would be much more meaningful if OU could become a better postseason competitor.

We play like maniacs in Nov...win the Title Game...then lose the edge totally in December. A disturbing and embarrassing pattern for a team that gets to the Final Four of football...the elite level.

It's not really about losing any edge. Baker's last season, we were incredibly competitive and went to overtime. I thought RIley's biggest mistake was not playing Sermon more, especially in the 2nd half. And there was the big screw up just before half.

Kyler's last season, we lost two incredibly important players, most notably Hollywood. Not sure we'd have beaten Bama, but we'd have been competitive. He tried to play and it was worthless. If he'd have not gotten hurt in Q4 against the Horns in Jerry World, we'd have been competitive. We're not talking about losing a starter. We're talking about losing a difference maker. Sometimes you have a close to elite backup. Sometimes you don't.

Last season was an obliteration waiting to happen. That was one of the best college football teams, anybody has seen in the finals. They scored 46 on the road against Alabama. OU missing key offensive players, not just the suspended, was facing scoring every possession just to have a chance. Because of injuries and suspensions, we were playing players in the secondary who hadn't played a significant snap all year. And we weren't all that great anyway.

We needed everything to go right to be competitive against LSU last season. The opposite happened.

I know it was embarrassing to watch. But players didn't cause this befcause of a lack of effort, or losing their edge. Winning a playoff game requires greatness, and some breaks. We seem to have used all our luck in 2000.

OU's problem has been having poor defenses, not with quarterbacking or the offense overall.

That's fair. But if you look at the great playoff games, especially the finals, the teams that get there are scoring A LOT. You don't get to 40, you really don't have a chance. So you slow them down as well as you can, and score, score, score. Four of the six champions got to 40 in the title game. Clemson won with 35. The only game where the winner was under 30, was two SEC teams who knew each other really well. The last two winners scored 44 and 42 against high quality defenses.

As efficient and innovative and explosive as OUr offense has been under Riley, imo, we have to field an above average defense. We will never be able to compete with the Clemsons, Alabamas, Ohio States or Georgias until then. They preach defense and win. I don't care how many points you score, you still lose when you give up more than you score. Remember, we've had pathetic and I mean pathetic defensive play since Venables left and until an emphases is placed on the defensive side of the ball, lather, rinse, repeat. I think Grinch has us headed in the right direction. As comical as this might sound, I prefer not just trying to outscore my opponent, I like the comfort of knowing I've got a defense that can stand up and compete with the best.

Says it all ^^^^
And seeing football become much more about high-scoring offenses in recent years, defensive football does not seem to be about shutting an opponent down, but more about containment, or having some clutch defensive stops during close, high-scoring games.
Think of how many games were lost by OU over the past 2 decades in which even ONE key defensive stop would have won the game. Or think of the post season bowl/playoff losses....some by blowouts.....in which the defense never even showed up. Too numerous to mention.
Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State will sometimes give up points in a high-scoring game because it's now the name of the game, but they always seem to get defensive plays at critical times to get a win.

If OU wins out (Baylor, West Virginia, Kansas, OSU) we play in the B12 CCG.
K. St plays OSU, at ISU, at Baylor, Texas). They should easily lose two of these with their QB out.
We would own tie-breaker against all 2 loss teams. Iowa St could end up with one loss, or two with the tie-breaker over OU.
Would really like to get I-State again in the CCG.

ISU would be the dead last one of the possibilities I’d like to see. They’ve got wall to wall trees at their skill positions, & 5’10” doesn’t match up on 6’4-5” well regardless of if it’s game 1 or game 10.

Yeah you're spot on. The game favors the offenses anymore. Just need a competent defense for some timely stops or turnovers.

We've never been as far off as some think but there was a talent gap between us and the Alabamas. And then I've had some more recent concerns about Lincoln and his teams inability to slam the lid on the coffin.
