Barry Switzer -- “Guys, the team you last saw in late November and early December, you never see again. Either you get better or you get worse. Nothing stays the same. Distractions of the holidays, players looking at the NFL and who they train with, early defections to the NFL, coaches looking for other jobs and just being told you are the best gets to some teams. The coaches that can keep their teams focused the best, they win. I had teams – very talented teams at OU – that didn’t show up at bowl time and we got beat. I had teams that just pieced it all together in the practices leading to the bowl game and they were great. It’s a hard read, but I always feel as though “focus” is this biggest part of winning come bowl time and in any sort of playoff situation that will eventually happen.”

Well on the surface it appears that this year, unlike the past couple of years, LSU will have much more distractions than OU. We've experienced Coaches looking/leaving, Award ceremonies like crazy, & NFL distractions. He's right. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the suspensions. But at least they came early on and I hope the next ups will be settled in by gametime.

I'm telling you guys, LSU losing their RB is a huge loss for them.

Yup, only the QB would be bigger.

In most years LSU has several future NFL RBs ready, lose one and no big deal. This year CEH is the only one who can do it all, 2 highly rated Fr RBs have shown very little. LSU O works by being able to run tempo w/o subs, preventing D from substituting for situation. w/o him that won't be nearly as effective.

Unfortunately he ran into that situation January 1, 1978 against Arkansas...

I wonder if people realize how close Switzer came to having 6-7 national titles in his tenure at OU...

Switzer will always be my favorite Sooner HC because I wasn’t born till 59 and missed those glory Bud days. He came so close to being the modern day Saben and had he won 6 or 7 he would be in the top 2 greatest coaches of all time in my opinion. Yea he had some problems but the man knew how to lead a team and even today he is still a great Sooner fan.

One may not like what he ssys at times but he doesn’t bullshit around when asked a question when it comes to OU football. I still can’t believe so many Greatest coaches list has Dr. Tom ahead of him when he dominated him H2H on the football field.

hey ct...no way does 86 / 87 go on any list of possible OU championships. canes dominated us in 3 straight games starting with a game i was at in 85. as much as i hate to say it, they were clearly better than us
I agree, and the fact that 2 of the 3 games were in Miami didn't help either....but it was still ONE game that denied OU a national championship each of those three years.
I believe the 1985-86-87 were the best 3-year teams OU ever had, but Miami each year was better and it was at that time that the wishbone offense began to show itself as becoming obsolete.

I believe Jerry Tubbs, Tommy McDonald and Jimmy Harris might have disagreed with you about that.

They never lost a game in 3 years. I don't think it was 38% over that time.

OU after the '55 season beat the best other team in the country. Boz's guys went 0-3.
The opposition of OU from 1954-56....3 years....had a winning percentage of 38%.
Notre Dame has a two-win season in 1956 and Texas was 1-9 that same year.
The Big 8 was labeled “Oklahoma and the 7 dwarfs” during most of the 1950’s.
The 1956 Orange Bowl win over Tatum’s 10-0 Maryland team (20-6) was Wilkinson’s greatest win. But the fact remains that OU in 1954-56 did not have the challenges that the 1985-86 teams had.....yet it was those Sooner teams in the 1950’s that put Oklahoma among the elites, where it’s been ever since.
