Mayfield looks like a kid having the time of his life out there, and the offense is responding. Very refreshing to see!

But, once again Mike struggles against these "spread'em out wide offenses. We HAVE to fix the D if we are going to get where we want to be.

I have said this before but it's still true, IMO. Mike Stoops can defend most offenses very well with the exception of wide open, pass happy, spreads. Mike was one of the best back before everybody started running a Mike Leach type offense. Leach's problem was that he had to out score his opponent because he never had a defense that could stop even the most traditional offense. Now the elite programs that have defensive talent have switched or converted to some type of fast paced, spread formation. I just don't think Mike has the know how or maybe the talent to put a top 20 defensive unit on the field. It's a really difficult coaching position being the DC.

Sorry, I kind of got away from the OP. Baker rocks.....and I wouldn't have thought I would have admitted that two weeks ago. I was wrong. But I would like for Baker to have a bit more touch rather than throwing those unnecessary rifle passes sometimes. Still I can live with his faults because of his grit and spirit.

I'll get gutted for this, don't care but, Mike knows exactly how to stop spread offenses...he doesn't have the horses to do it!
Every week so far, we've had some 'player' be held out because his personal needs exceeded the teams.
No way Mbanasor (SP) should have been out there against Tulsa.

Even Sanchez has his moments of error.
You can bluff your ass off, sooner or later everyone will know you only had a pair of fours.;)

fitty, you may be right. I even said that he may not have the talent. But on paper, OU has very good talent. So what's the answer? You could argue either point of view and still not have a clear conclusion. Tough issue.

Oh, I know, I'm no more correct about this than you.
Just a bunch of supposing on a keyboard.

We're all good.

On reflection, I suppose my gripe is that these guys, all they have to do is toe a relatively easy line for at most three years.
That some of these asshats can't manage that is just beyond me.

That's all, rant over.

Well I agree that Mike does look pretty impotent at stopping these offenses, and like last year with the huge 10-12yd cushions he even appeared to be borderline clueless. But also are there any defensive coordinators in the country that would be able to stop a Baylor offense consistently??

someone said it earlier about the accuracy of the QB..I don't care what offense you run, if the QB can't get it out and right to the receiver it doesn't matter. The Tulsa QB threw lasers continuously on the outside. You really don't see that very often. Same with Baker...he throws a great pass to the outside...and very accurate. The little slants are one thing but to throw it out on the flat is not easy. I am not defending Mike at all here...just saying the Tulsa QB was outstanding...much less his receivers. Time will tell.....3 games in and I am glad out whole team had that crazy experience....

I wasn't on here last Jan/Feb/March but I was hoping Bob would go one more and get rid of Mike. Don't get me wrong I love what Mike has done for the OU program and his loyalty, but the D stops at his feet. He is the one responsible for the D talent brought in and he is responsible for getting that D talent to play at a high level. It's more than a trend with him and this type of offense. No one hopes Mike turns it around more than I do, but damn giving up 600 yards 4-5 times a year seems to be the norm these days. So, I guess if you can't stop'em you go get an O coord that can out gain'em and out score'm.

I haven't seen anything yet from either Baylor or TCU to suggest that they can't lose a game. You can bet that if OU can survive the next six games without a loss, that the game in Waco will be in prime time, and OU won't be a huge underdog.

You can't make much of Baylor's non-conference games of SMU, Lamar and Rice, nor of TCU's games against Minnesota (a 7-point win), and SFA and SMU. I'm not ready to give up on OU's defense. It was OU's defense that kept the Sooners alive against Tennessee after the home team had forged a 17-point lead.

Minnesota's two wins were over Colorado State by 3 in OT, and by 3 again over Kent State. SFA also lost to Northern Arizona and McNeese, and SMU's one win was over North Texas, one of the worst teams in the country. Lamar's two wins were over an NAIA team in Bacone, and a 3-point win over Sam Houston State from the FCS division. And Baylor's upcoming game against Rice will tell us nothing as well.

With Baker at QB, OU should be in the hunt this year, regardless of how you feel about the defense. Tulsa is #2 in the FBS behind Bowling Green in total offense right now. That didn't all come against OU. I won't be surprised if the Hurricane is a serious contender to win the AAC title this year. Tennessee's hangover from the OU loss translated into a 55-10 win over Western Carolina, not a good team, but a result that suggests that the Vols may have some success in the SEC this year.
