Austin Kendall rescues W. Va.

The good news is that Army had nine wins this year. However, that record is deceiving because we had a very weak schedule. Due to the pandemic, we had to schedule a bunch of teams (whoever we could get) at the last minute, including some FCS and "bottom feeder" FBS teams. Army's defense was solid but our o-line and QB play was, frankly, substandard.

The above disclaimer notwithstanding, I was very proud of the fact that we won the Commander-in-Chief's trophy by beating Navy and Air Force--on back to back weeks, no less, since the AFA couldn't play on the originally scheduled date. It's the first time since the inception of the trophy in 1972 that Army has won it in three of the past four years. We've now won four of the last five against Navy and three of the past four against Air Force. Those accomplishments are unprecedented for us and, again, I'm elated about that.

After watching Army football every year since we moved to Connecticut in 1986, I very happy at Army's resurgence under Coach Monken in recent years.
My dad got me hooked on college football when we lived in Houston the first time, 1956-1960, with trips to Rice Stadium and two trips to OU-Texas in 1958 and 1959.
When we moved to NJ in 1960, there was Army football less than 2 hours away and Army was fairly competitive the years we lived in NJ, 1960-1969.....and we attended the OU-Army game in Yankee Stadium in 1961 in which I witnessed some big time "Sooner magic" on OU's no-huddle 75 yard run by Mike McClellan in OU's 14-8 win.
About 15-20 years ago I attended an Army game in which Army was getting beaten badly. I chatted with a cadet there about Army's football program and asked him if he ever thought or hoped that Army would upgrade its program to be more competitive......his replay was "That's not what we are here for, sir". I quietly retreated into my hole.
The Army game in 2018 went the way I had hoped for: a close, competitive game with OU winning in OT.
Army has always been my second team behind OU.

Everyone couldn't help but laugh at me during the OU vs. Army game in 2018. I was sitting next to my wife and the normal group of season ticket holders. They kept asking me, "when you say 'we' and 'our' are you referring to OU or Army? Talk about conflicted... Like CT, I was okay with the game's result. OU won in double OT after the Cadets played admirably. I was also so proud of Army not only for their performance on the field but also leaving their locker room in spotless condition when the norm for most visiting/losing teams is to trash the locker room. That was a game and night I'll not forget--ever.
