With Denver bringing the most coaches and Baker on display - again - that just confirmed what I already knew in my heart is true. I've never mentioned it in this context, but my pro team, with whom I've had bad blood in the current year, have been goo-ga-ing Mayfield for months now, and it makes me both thrilled and worried. Thrilled that Baker could be the franchise that Elway has been looking hard for, and concerned for Baker's health.

Last season the Broncos were promised a large quality improvement on the offensive line, especially on the left (blind) side, and neither happened. The Bronco line was a complete disaster that deserved "the credit" more than the QB or anyone else. As a result of being horrible they got the 5th pick in the draft. In order to steal Baker away, they have to get the top pick, and moving from 5 to 1 doesn't fit too well with the possibility of large improvement on the OL.

See the ambivalence here? Baker is as elusive as anybody in a lot of years, and just like a mobile Elway stuck much of his career with a line built for running, we may never find out the true heights that Baker could achieve with a team, for example, like Jacksonville, where he'd see a steam stacked with shiny new tools, but without the generational QB to take them to their probable dynasty.

Ya gotta love it, and it drives you nuts!

Back when I was growing up in the '50s and '60s there were three televised games a week. The college game of the week, generally settled on before the season started, and two pro games early and late.

Living in northeastern Oklahoma, it seemed that every game I watched featured the Chiefs or the Cowboys, and I grew to hate both of them for dominating my NFL experience.

I did not have a favorite pro team until I moved to Breckenridge during the Broncos 1st Super Bowl season. Orange Crush and rickety old Craig Morton. He was hospitalized after the AFC Championship and released the Thursday before the Super Bowl.

I've been on the hook since, but I could get a bit frisky if they stop being a team that thrives for success.
