Why I think OU is deserving of a playoff spot... regardless of their pass defense.

OU 2018 vs OU 2017:

This years offense is averaging 8.9 yards per play, while the defense is giving up 5.6 yards per. +3.3.

The 2017 offense averaged 8.3 yards per play, while the defense gave up 5.8 yards per. +2.5.

Improvement.

This years run defense is giving up 3.6 yds per rush.

Last year’s team gave up 4.4 yds per rush.

It was a big mistake scheduling the best triple-option Army (8 - 2) has featured in a long time. Why any Big XII team would schedule a triple-option team is beyond me. OU’s defensive stats against the run improve without the army outlier. OU gave up 339 rushing yards at 4.3 a carry.

I don’t see any games left on the schedule that will skew our run D stats towards the gutter.

Run D Improvement.

Obviously this years pass D has been (maybe a tad?) worse than last year giving up 272 yds per game against offenses that are averaging 34.6 attempts against it.

Last year the pass D gave up 238.4 yds per game against 31.8 attempts.

Certainly a negative and you have to figure WV will add to the woeful pass D stats.

However.

This years team is going to smash the all-time offensive efficiency record.

This might be the best offense OU has had. To go along with our ridiculous passing numbers we’ve got a QB that can take one 80 yds to the house with his legs. An element we didn’t have last year.

If the committee saw fit to include OU last year, there is ZERO reason to spout concern re: the 2018 defense.

It took a miracle + Mike Stoops for Georgia to beat us last year. We def deserved that spot. Does Georgia beat us if we have Kyler Murray scrambling to keep drives alive? This years Rushing numbers surpass last years by quite a bit in all categories.

Who knows.

What I do know is this OU team would compete with any team in last year’s playoffs. Emphasize ‘last years playoffs’.

That Alabama team didn’t have Tua.

I don’t see anyone beating this Alabama team.

A top 10 offense of all-time should absolutely get a shot. Who is going to tune in to see Alabama shut out Michigan or Notre Dame. Disney/ESPN’s sports ratings are tanking. They need to bring the hype for OU should they finish out the regular season with no more losses.

We certainly need a few losses from the select teams ahead of us in the poll to get in. If we get those losses & win out, Disney/ESPN has no anti-OU ground to stand on.

I don’t think they do at present. +3.3 vs +2.5.
