Coach switched up a couple of things late in the game and left Spangler outside....wide open 3's he made at least two that I can remember. He seems to have confidence issues here and there...I say shoot the effing ball if you are wide open.
Baylor went to a triangle and two defense. So with each of the two in opposite corners, the pick and pop was wide open a little above the free throw line extended about halfway between the FTLE and the top of the key, just outside the arc.
Baylor came from behind to win at Iowa State with a triangle and two, so my guess is that Lon had them work on that pretty hard in practice. Ryan has to take the shot because he's wide open and he can make it. He missed the first two, I believe, one I know for sure. But he'd gotten his range and nailed the next two. But before that, it was he and Kahdeem shooting those 12 footers not from the lane but from the baseline. Baylor was leaving them wide open to cover the guards from the arc. They are good at making those shots. They have to take them.
My remembrance is that Spangler did some of this a year ago, shooting the ball well in November and December and then just being totally unaggressive shooting one the conference games started. He cannot play like that. This team needs both of them to shoot that open shot from more than ten feet. And Ryan as far away as the three ball. The HAVE to. We don't want them passing on it until the NCAA's and then having teams just give them freebies while they only look to pass.
Ryan is such a terrific player, especially as a rebounder. But he goes through stretcher where his confidence in his shot is non existent and he almost will not shoot. He can't back away after a couple of misses. Today was a really good game for the time, because he shot after a couple of misses and they went in.
I think it was Wisconsin where he scored like 12 of our first 15. That made the defense play him honestly and we blew away last year's national runner-up. And Lattin's offense, when he looks for it, is really sound.
Today, before the subs gave up a 14-0 run at the end, these guys looked like the beat team in the country. Baylor isn't elite, but in Waco, they are really hard to beat. The Sooners today, made it look easy. Winning at Baylor could be the difference between first place in the conference and not.
