So, while we’re all whining about certain players going to other universities because OU won’t pay what they do (especially for some WRs), here’s an idea to consider about how some of this may really work from a guy who who has no inside info about any of these particular negotiations but has spent quite a bit of time negotiating deals in fields unrelated to this…
Taking the reporting at its word and the sources at theirs, OU came to this off season with the intent to “greatly increase” their investment in NIL. First and foremost, some of you need to realize that a lot of that NIL was spent on players already on roster. We all know that players are tampered with in this day and age, and keeping them isn’t easy or cheap. That aside, though, say you wanna spend on 4 receivers but other schools are driving the market way up. Add in knowing you have multiple positions to fill. Despite the optics of it to the fan base, you’re gonna let yourself get outbid early on for some guys if for no other reason than the sheer volume of options.
Skip ahead now that the QB seems to be close to on board and you have cost certainty there. You have a few targets that you really want in with him. And now what do you see? OU linked to one of the biggest WR targets out there. And by the way, his brother (who’s a safety) would come with him, too. Maybe that would help with another safety target who’s trying to work us for more money? Negotiating tools do work both ways. When it comes to closing time, if people wanna make outlandish asks, it helps to show them what that price range might get us. I’m not saying I know that’s going on, because I can’t possibly. But I do like the timing.
