If you were born from around 1980 - 1985 forward, you don't know chit about the wishbone or pure option offensive football. Saturday night you witnessed a mini-example of why Switzer (and then Osborne) totally dominated college football. Afterwards, I felt pride having watched future U.S. Army officers (with average/good talent) run the bone with absolute discipline and scare the hell out of all of us. (on their last drive I thought we were done and had the fork ready/LOL)
You cannot imagine what a young Switzer/Osborne with the best athletes in America would have done to our defense. (or any current top 25 defense) Army is/was a shadow of both OU & Nebraska's option teams, yet entertained Sooner fans with their own presentation of the 'bone. 4 yrds, 6, 3, 5, 8, etc. Nothing fancy/impressive, just 7-8 minutes gone and 7 points on the board.
Mike Stoops & Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, don't get off free. Both coaches lack of initiative could-should have cost us that game. One of the top 3-5 best college football coaches in history, and a genius of both offense & defense of wishbone/option football lives a stone throw from the campus. Barry's a healthy 80, bored, and ready to help the Sooners in a heartbeat. For Gawd's sake, WHY didn't you call him!!!!?
Finally, last January, Switzer could have hand picked a wishbone/option offensive team/QB from our entire roster. Then teach ALL of the defensive coaches how to stop the 'bone. During the spring, set aside time where Switzer's offense attacks our 1st team defense. Talk to our defensive kids after each play explaining what/how the offense is slashing them. Great, teaching tool for a game which could have knocked us out of any chance to be in the final four. P.S. I truly didn't mean to belittle any Sooner brethren, but if you didn't live with the wishbone for decades, you simply cannot comprehend how dangerous that offense is. Stoops' problem was pure arrogance. (his mindset is I don't need anyone to tell me a damned thing) I doubt few (if any) Army players could start for the Sooners, none the less they kept a bunch of OU coaches awake last night. LOL Of course I could be wrong, but I doubt it.
