We lost Jack Mildren, his opposing quarterback in the first 1972 Sugar Bowl, a decade ago. Both fell to cancer. Pat Sullivan, who was the 2nd best quarterback that day, the last of his Heisman season, was diagnosed in 2003. 16 years of treatments have taken its toll.

I know Sullivan was a college head coach, at at least one place, TCU. It didn't go well.

Both OU and Auburn were undefeated heading into the November rivalry game between two undefeated teams in 1971. Auburn lost to Bama. OU in the GOTC to Nebraska. Mildren led OU to a 31-0 lead in the Sugar Bowl, won by OU 40-22 after we somehow missed five extra points.

Nebraska beat Bama 40-6 in the Orange Bowl and OU ended up number two nationally after the bowls. 10-2 Colorado, also of the Big 8 ended up number 3 in the country. The only time ever that one conference was 1-2-3 in the final voting.
