A non-D point: why can't our WRs get open?

And why isn't that coach coming under fire?

How many times did Mayfield, including our last play, have or buy 6+ seconds (an eternity in football) and found no one open? Even that last play no one was remotely open. We are wasting the abilities of our OL.

And a Q for Riley: where are the check down passes (i.e., the outlet)? And I'd love to see the shuttle pass that Q. Griffin made a living off of. Anything to suck the DBs up to the LOS so our damn WRs can get open.

If it were me, the main drill this week would be scramble drills, with acute attention placed on the WRs' techniques, coming back to the QB, etc.

We can fuss & complain about the WRs which is deserving to a degree, but throwing up 31 its at home against Iowa St 3rd string QB should be plenty of points to win. IMO, we should be running the ball more anyway. Everyone knows the D is the weak link of the team, the plan should be about ball control & clock management. Keeping our defense on the sidelines will help us win more games.

They ran a 4-2-5 mostly. Their weak safety is away from the strength and their SS is towards the strength. The FS, Corner, SS, and one LB operating on one call made by the FS. With LB and Line hit on a front call. This forces the WR too the outside of the hash and takes the middle away. While covering the A,B and C gap. It pushes everything outside and leaves running lanes packed and hash mark to sideline the only throws.

We normal use a lot of motion to get isolation with our WR on a Nickel Safety or leak a TE,RB, FB. The problem is, it's a only a true dual option. Reciever A or a leaked HB,RB or TE.

DeeDee was great at creating a C option with Baker scrambling and DeeDee breaking route. Nobody has shown that same ability this year, to scramble to a school yard route.

Every team has a 'Best' WR. DeeDee is ours. He has always managed to get open. Nothing has stopped him this year but his injury. And it was telling. He is the cream of our crop. The score, passing game are telling after he left. But the offense still put up 31 its which should be plenty. That's 4 TDs & a FG.

We have basically stopped Throwing screen, quick outs, etc. This is how you attack this type of d just look at isu they killed us several times on this. We need to stop looking for home runs and take what is giving to you. Baker and Lincoln have become too greedy and it has killed us the last 2 games. It of course came back to bite us in the butt this weekend. If we do this against Texas they will eat us alive and bake might have 3 or more interceptions especially hall and Elliott back there

They actually have very good DBs, schemed us well, and ... the WRs did actually get open for three quarters of the game. WR is not a position of weakness for OU this season. In my mind, Baker starting pressing too much in the 4th quarter. There were several plays where WRs broke open in the fourth, but he held onto the ball. It seemed as though he knew the protection was so strong, so strong that he was waiting for a receiver to break open for a big play. The smaller windows he can normally hit just didn't seem good enough for him on Saturday.

I expect our gameplans will be more reasonable against UT, which clearly has an even better defense. I'm not ready to jump off the bandwagon yet. I think this team has a very high ceiling, and we'll see that again on Saturday. Now, we are not yet to a dominant athlete level where we can just show up. I think that's partially to blame for the overly conservative coaching. This needs to change.

Wow. I didn't realize Dede Westbrook still played for us. Or are you talking about Cee Dee Lamb?

Yes... Lamb. I think most know what I meant.
I also think Adams is our best running back. He is extremely quick and has good speed. While Sermon is a load to bring down, he does not possess the speed and quickness to break long runs like Adams, this is why Sermon kept getting 3-5 yards a carry and Adams was breaking free until he got hurt.

As for the defense, I think we saw what youth can do to a very talented team and that's the weak link.

You know what! We had underneath receivers open that Mayfield chose to overlook in trying to find the deeper guys. Either throw the ball to those guys or run the ball. But stop bouncing up and down behind your offensive line for 8-9 seconds waiting for someone deep to get open.

This ^^^^^^
And if you go back and watch, there were receivers open early. Mayfield went into hero mode, holding the ball too long, using his legs too much, looking for the home run ball... much like he did last year against tOSU and Houston. They had to reign him in last year, and he played much better. Hopefully, it doesn't take two losses to get that done this year.

I also think the offense was way too "cute". Got that big ol', highly regarded o-line... bloody their ass up for a while and then everything will work.

rein... If they rein him in, we might yet reign again as champs, come rain or shine.

It is very apparent to me that Mixon and Perine are sorely missed. The threat of them made it better for everyone.I had a feeling it would be harder for this team to run clock and dominate with the running game as in the past.I think after the tOSU game it gave everyone a false sense of how good they really are.It is kinda crazy to think we would be better than last year. And Mike is still there.I have had to lower my expectations greatly but that's ok we probably should have anyway. These OFFENSIVE players should get better. The defense is what it is which we all know its going to be a struggle unfortunately.
