With the signing of Kelly, I count 3 5 star players on the roster. Mixon, Murray and now Kelly, did I miss anyone else?

While we're talking about five star recruits, I'd make a couple of observations. One is that we've had some five star guys who were something between disappointments and big disappointments. Smoke Patterson, Trey Metoyer, Brandon Williams, R.J. Washington, Jermie Calhoun, Stephen Good and Mike Reed. Those are all we've had the last nine years before tonight. Well Patterson was before that.

The only two five star recruits that were five star players were the best at their positions and still are. Before those guys, were Adrian Peterson and Gerald McCoy. Both are the highest paid player at their position in the NFL. They're five star NFL players.

But Kelly's tape is different than the others. When I saw video of the guys from 2008 to 2014, I didn't see five star players. Williams was a five star high school player but awfully small for a great college running back. he's the only one of the six who was really a regular college starter and that wasn't at OU and it wasn't at running back. He's a corner at A&M. Good and Washington were rotation guys who never threatened even honorable mention on an All Conference team.

Kelly's video is different. He may not be a great college player. You never know. But he is a tall, big, strong, fast guy who makes plays and looks elite. I believe he'll be a great player at OU, and likely be a key contributor in 2016.

The key intangible attribute of ALL of Coach Mike's best LBs was leadership. A coach on the field, the QB of the defense. The last two notables were Ryan Reynolds and Austin Box. Hopefully we'll have another soon.

Yep, if they went as high as 6 stars, he'd be that.
A phenom that will play this fall.
He's too damn good to redshirt, besides, we're depleted at LB.

I know Lampkin is not a 5* but will he be a rs/freshman next year or a soph? I know we are going to be very young on both sides of the ball but if all the newbies catch on quick we may be one hell of a team next year. Not knowin how this class pans out but it seems we filled a lot of our needs. I'm already gettin a bit excited.

Rating/evaluating high school prospects is not an exact science. That's common knowledge.
But what I think is the key to recruiting is finding players that are motivated to excel BEFORE they enter a college program.
Players come to OU knowing they are expected to perform at the highest level and to play in big games. Motivation should not be something for the coaches to instill in their players' minds. They should enter the program already carrying that motivation. Motivation should be part of their mental "DNA"......and should serve to improve their skills.

I was watching ESPN's NSD program and according to ESPN, Alabama had 8 starters on this year's national championship team that were either rated #1 or #2 at their position as a recruit including their Heisman Trophy winning running back. I tried to check it out but Rivals has changed the home pages for so there it's a bit clumsy to find to go back and look at recruiting classes by year that shows the position rankings. Regardless, having 8 starters like Alabama had this year shows just how well Bama does in the recruiting game and how really well Saban's coaches develop them once they are on campus. I'm sure that Alabama has had many 5-4 stars flame out just as all schools do, but when you have so many highly ranked players there is a better than average chance that you are still going to ended up with a pretty damn good team. This year's Bama class has 3 #1 and 1 #2 position recruits sign. I'm like to know just how many #1 or #2 position recruits are on the rosters for each college. If it was available information, I could probably have a better chance of picking future playoff teams.
