We've got to many quality DL to stick with the 3-4....and I'm sure some on here are tired of seeing talk about this.

I strongly suspect that next year we will run a lot more 4-2 and 4-3. Last season, 2 of our best 5 D players were OLBs whose best skill was pass rushing. Next year likely to be DLs. We'll play 4 a l ot more.

I don't know about you guy's, but I would hate to see Will Johnson on the bench. I think he was the defensive new comer of the year. I guess in a 4-2 he would see the field, not so much in the 4-3.

I personally like the 3-4 against the pass happy Big 12. We really stopped the run except for Texas and Clemson. Also the 3-4 really can be 5-2 on shifts and it opens up blitz's from both the corners and safeties.
I am not a coaching type poster, so tell me where I'm wrong.....

Don't worry. In this conference we will play 5 db's a lot. They will play him as a loose SAM in a 4-3 and nickle back in a 4-2. He will get his 35 to 40 snaps per game.

Did he play the SAM anytime last year? I remember a few times when we were in the 4-3. Tennessee as I recall..........

He didn't get on the field much until after the RRR debacle. But when they take the nickle back and play him up close to the los, he's essentially a lightweight Sam. They'll spend the spring deciding who their best eleven defensive players are. And then figure out the best way to get them on the field together most often.

It's also possible that Johnson will win the corner job, but if one of the young guys steps up to meet that, then we'll have an experienced nickle returning. We played some 4-2 and 4-3 last year. We just didn't have traditional bodies on the perimeter. Striker isn't a 4 man line defensive end body, but if he lines up there, and tries to beat the tackle to the passer, it's not that different than a 245 pound guy doing the same thing, unless they run zone read. I just hope we don't see any of those third and 15 defenses with one or two guys with their hand in the ground and everybody else standing trying to fool the other guys.

I believe that next season, we're going to have at least six stud Big Guys to play defense, and I hope we play as many of them as much as possible, while still keeping them fresh.

Interesting to speculate on.

Given the probability of injuries or who might come forth as a solid contributer, it's hard to say how the depth chart will play out by September 3rd.
I see many other players who could be in the mix:
I wonder if DL's Gallimore, Garnett, Lampkin, Orso-Bacchus will become contributors, and veteran Jordan Wade has to be figured into the NT rotation.
How will Mann, Ijalana (converted from TE) and Campbell develop as DE's ?
Is Hatari Byrd going to contribute ?

I figure that there could be around 7 newcomers getting playing time:
LB Kelly and JUCOs Doucet and Beal....barring injury, I don't see any of these three redshirting.
DE Bledsoe and Jackson....both may be too good to redshirt as freshman.
DB Motley and JUCO Jordan Parker....Parker for sure.

Right now I don't know what alignment they plan on running Mike says 3-4 but right now we don't have the depth to run that yet. So I am going more for a 4-2-5 thus Jordan Parker isn't a Juco player.
