1. At least one more year with Lamar Jackson. Louisville's junior quarterback is a transcendent athlete who can make good defenses look like a Pop Warner team, and the 2017 season could potentially be his last in CFB. Enjoy this ride -- his weekly highlights are can't-miss television, and when he's gone, we might never see another quite like him.

2. The Josh Rosen-Sam Darnold Show. The quarterbacks at UCLA and USC will downplay how their seasons comparatively unfold, as will their coaches. But the fact is they're two of college football's best players, playing the game's most high-profile position at rival schools in Los Angeles. The comparisons are inevitable, and their Nov. 18 head-to-head matchup could be epic theater.

3. Jim Harbaugh, Act III. His second season in Ann Arbor has Michigan fans rightfully excited for the third, but he has a lot of talent to replace. To challenge in the Big Ten again, he'll need a lot of inexperienced players to emerge and thrive in major roles.

4. Alabama-Florida State. How about a matchup of these two powerhouse programs in Week 1? A decade after Bobby Bowden beat Nick Saban's first Alabama team, 21-14, in Jacksonville, Fla., Jimbo Fisher will face a much tougher task in Atlanta on Sept. 2. The future NFL talent on this field will be make scouts wish they had extra eyes.

5. Tom Herman, Longhorn-style. Texas football has become college football's wounded lion, and UT fans are tired of the pain. Enter Herman, whose boundless energy lifted Houston to a new level of relevance. The challenge now for the Longhorns' new coach: rediscover an old level of relevance.

6. How will J.T. Barrett be remembered after his final college season? It seems like it was a decade ago when he stepped in for an injured Braxton Miller as Ohio State's quarterback. The Buckeyes offense doesn't always look pretty with Barrett at the helm, but he oozes leadership.

7. The Big Ten East. The battle between Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State last year supplanted the SEC West, at least temporarily, as the most competitive division in the game.

8. How will Clemson's offense handle the loss of Deshaun Watson, along with all the key playmakers who surrounded him? Dabo Swinney's offenses never seem to struggle no matter who is running the show, but Mike Williams, Wayne Gallman and Jordan Leggett won't be around for the new guy to lean on.

9. Baker Mayfield is one of the few players who are, by themselves, worth the price of a ticket. He's always been fun to watch, but this year, he'll carry the Oklahoma offense like never before.

10. Derrius Guice as a full-time starter. Now out of Leonard Fournette's shadow, LSU's spectacular running back will get to cast a long one of his own.

11. A pivotal season for Brian Kelly. The Notre Dame coach will try to rebound from a 4-8 season with a new quarterback against the Fighting Irish's always-tough schedule.

12. More Ed Oliver. Houston's incredible defensive tackle can't possibly top his freshman season, can he? To make 23 tackles for loss as an interior defensive lineman was a stunning debut, but it wouldn't be smart to doubt him.

13. LSU's Ed Orgeron is back in charge of a program, which is always fun, and this time it's not on an interim basis.

14. Oklahoma-Ohio State, the rematch. Bob Stoops and the Sooners must go on the road to avenge last year's 45-24 loss to the Buckeyes, and The Shoe is no easy place for payback.

15. The return of Derwin James from a knee injury. Florida State's gifted safety, presuming good health, has ACC Defensive Player of the Year potential.

16. The Big 12 Championship Game is back. Finally, the Power Five conferences will all have a stage on which to play on the first weekend in December.

17. An improved Jalen Hurts. Alabama's freshman quarterback went 14-1 last year despite shaky accuracy on intermediate and deep routes. If former Patriots TE coach Brian Daboll, now the Tide's OC, can get Hurts' passing to be as effective as his running, the Crimson Tide should be right back in the playoff.

18. Here's hoping the Michigan-Ohio State game has Big Ten and playoff implications once again. With those stakes in place last year, it was the best game of the CFB regular season.

19. How will P.J. Fleck fare in his first year at Minnesota?

20. Oklahoma State WR James Washington goes for his third straight 1,000-yard receiving season, with the quarterback (Mason Rudolph) who has gotten him there twice so far.

21. The crossroads for Butch Jones. Tennessee fans are tired of watching someone else represent the SEC East in the league title game; this is the elephant in the room for UT's fifth-year coach.

22. After eating ACC centers for lunch as a freshman, what kind of a encore does Clemson's 340-pound DT Dexter Lawrence have in store?

23. Wyoming QB Josh Allen's opening game at Iowa, one of only two games he'll play against a Power Five team.

24. Ole Miss QB Shea Patterson. As a freshman last year, he showed flashes of why he was a five-star recruit. Coach Hugh Freeze was wise to burn his redshirt and get him some exposure; he'll be better off for it this fall.

25. Remember Will Grier? After a year and a half off due to a suspension and a transfer, and with a 6-0 record as a starter at Florida, he re-emerges at West Virginia.

26. Another chance to see Nick Chubb in the Georgia backfield.

27. The older Bill Snyder gets, the more you can't help but cheer for him. He's planning to be back this fall at Kansas State, after battling throat cancer, and he'll be 78 by season's end.

28. Enjoy one of the game's most dazzling return specialists, Texas A&M's Christian Kirk. The next punt he takes to the house will be his sixth.

29. Auburn fans have all but anointed former Baylor QB Jarrett Stidham as the Tigers' starting quarterback, even if coach Gus Malzahn hasn't. Supplanting Sean White to start the season is one challenge; finishing the year that way is another.

30. PSU RB Saquon Barkley's ability to make the first tackler miss makes him worth an afternoon on the couch for college football fans who aren't Nittany Carlos Watkins is a blow, but no DL in the country brings back a trio like Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence and Clelin Ferrell.

32. With the likes of Adoree' Jackson and Jabrill Peppers now gone, who emerges as the game's most prolific two-way player?

33. Florida vs. Michigan, Sept. 2. You might expect this to be a defensive struggle, but with all the defensive talent both teams lost from last year, the final score here might surprise you.

34. Washington QB Jake Browning. No, he doesn't have WR John Ross anymore, but hopefully he won't have to play through a shoulder injury again, either.

35. Whether Pittsburgh DB Jordan Whitehead returns to his part-time role on offense or not, it will be good to see the due to NCAA sanctions, and he faces Alabama, Auburn and LSU over a four-week stretch.

38. Will the TCU offense rebound? Just a couple years ago, it scored like a pinball machine. Last year, not so much. One reason: it ranked 95th in the country in red-zone scoring efficiency.

39. How does Stanford's offense surive the post-Christian McCaffrey era? We know this much: under David Shaw, it'll start with toughness up front.

40. Virginia S Quin Blanding getting the national attention he deserves.

41. Lane Kiffin at FAU. Whether this curious marriage is a winner or a trainwreck, it'll be fun to watch.

42. Can Nick Fitzgerald lead the SEC in rushing as a quarterback? Mississippi State's fourth-year junior fell just 12 yards short of doing so last year.

43. Willie Taggart's reset at Oregon. When we last left the Ducks, their 2016 tailspin ended with rival Oregon State handing them their eighth loss.

44-46. Two players who will draw plenty of attention with their returns from season-ending injuries are UCLA QB Josh Rosen and FSU S Derwin James, but here are three more who merit watching, as well:

» Arizona RB Nick Wilson, whose last healthy season resulted in 1,375 yards (2014).

» South Carolina LB Skai Moore, an undersized but dynamic talent, back from a herniated disc in his neck.

» Texas RB Chris Warren III, son of the former Seahawks RB of the same name, who was supposed to share the rushing load that D'Onta Foreman commanded last season.

47. Another big-time cornerback coming out of LSU. This year, it figures to be speedster Donte Jackson.

48. One last go-round for QB Luke Falk, the Washington State senior who could finish his career with 15,000 passing yards.

49. After Nathan Peterman resurrected his college career through a transfer to Pitt, former USC QB Max Browne will try to do the same.

50. The rise of a star defender in the Big 12 other than Texas LB Malik Jefferson. In NFL.com analyst Chad Reuter's Top 150, Jefferson (No. 13) is the only Big 12 defender ranked in the top 90. Ouch.

51. Texas-USC on Sept. 16. Yes, it's their first meeting since the 2006 national title game.

52. Massive Oklahoma OT Orlando Brown, Jr. (6-foot-8, 360 pounds), the son of late former Ravens and Browns OT Orlando Brown, is back as a fourth-year junior. And though he's a bit short on technique, his power is something to behold.

53. Mark your calendar for Saturday, Nov. 25. That's rivalry day in college football, when you'll have to divide your attention between Michigan-Ohio State, Alabama-Auburn, Florida-Florida State and others.

54. Arizona State senior RB Kalen Ballage going out like he should, as one of the nation's top offensive threats.

55. At No. 55, fives are wild for Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin: as in three straight five-loss seasons for a $5 million-a-year coach. Five more losses this year could make his seat too hot for sitting.

56. North Dakota State, which produced Eagles QB Carson Wentz, attempts to get back to the FCS title game. After five straight FCS championships, James Madison knocked off the Bison in the semifinals last year.

57. The rise of the next dominant RB at Wisconsin, following Corey Clement. This time, the heir apparent isn't obvious, but at Camp Randall, it's always a question of who, not if.

58. Can Brandon Harris end his college career on a strong note in a new uniform? The former LSU quarterback who couldn't hold the job in Baton Rouge will compete to replace Mitchell Trubisky at North Carolina.

59. Major Applewhite's first venture into the head coaching ranks, with Houston.

60. What will transfer-happy DB Shaq Wiggins make of his third (yes, third) FBS stop? He started at Georgia, went to Louisville, and now returns to the SEC East to finish at Tennessee.

61. Alabama-LSU. A rivalry in which one team has won six straight wouldn't normally ring the must-watch bell, but this annual line-of-scrimmage slugfest is as close to NFL-level physicality as a college game gets.

62. Royce Freeman's return to his 2015 form. Look for the Oregon running back to again be one of the game's dominant offensive threats.

63. What's in store for Indiana WR Simmie Cobbs under a new coach (Tom Allen) and after a season washed out by an ankle injury?

64. Miami LB Shaq Quarterman, who got thrown into the fire as a freshman last year and responded exceptionally well, should be one of the ACC's top linebackers.

65. More targets for Oklahoma TE Mark Andrews, a red-zone monster who should become a much bigger part of the Sooners' offense.

66. Clemson WR Deon Cain's emergence as a star.

67. Geoff Collins, one of the game's better defensive minds, sheds the coordinator role to sit in the big chair at Temple.

68. Can Nebraska senior De'Mornay Pierson-El recapture the magic that made him one of college football's most exciting punt returners as a freshman in 2014?

69. With Chris Godwin off to the NFL, it's DaeSean Hamilton's turn to step in as Penn State's WR1. With a veteran QB in Trace McSorley, expect him to light it up in the Big Ten.

70. They know Boston College DE Harold Landry's name around the ACC. By the end of this year, they'll know it around the nation.

71. Will USF play more like Louisville did under Charlie Strong, or more like Texas did?

72. Can Alabama upgrade at left tackle from a second-round pick in Cam Robinson? As a freshman last year, right tackle Jonah Williams had the better season of the two, and he'll flop to the left side this fall.

73. Fireworks in Gainesville. The Florida Gators' offense hasn't been truly explosive in years. This season, it had better be, or fans will let third-year coach Jim McElwain hear about it.

74. Is this the year Oregon WR Charles Nelson establishes himself as a major offensive threat? He stepped up last year with 52 catches, but he's capable of much more in the categories of yards-per-catch (10.7) and TDs (5).

75. New offensive wrinkles in the SEC West: More than half the division (Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn) has a fresh face in the offensive coordinator role.

76. After being the forgotten man at Notre Dame, QB Malik Zaire has one more year to make a splash as a graduate transfer -- wherever it might be.

77. Virginia LB Micah Kiser's decision to stay for a fifth-year senior season sets him up for a serious run at the Butkus Award.

78. Let's hope South Florida QB Quinton Flowers gets his due as one of the most exciting talents in the game. What will it take? An AAC title and a New Year's Six bowl would help a lot.

79. Can new coach Jeff Brohm breathe life into Purdue football? Believe this: If his teams don't win, they'll at least score a lot.

80. The Les Miles Watch. You won't hear his name much in September, but just wait until November when a few high-profile firings become imminent. He'll be hotly pursued.

81-89. Nine individual matchups we can't wait to see:

» Louisville QB Lamar Jackson vs. FSU S Derwin James, Oct. 21

» Penn State RB Saquon Barkley vs. Iowa LB Josey Jewell, Sept. 23

» Oklahoma OT Orlando Brown Jr. vs. Ohio State DE Tyquan Lewis, Sept. 9

» Miami WR Ahmmon Richards vs. FSU CB Tarvarus McFadden, Sept. 16

» Texas OT Connor Williams vs. Kansas DE Dorance Armstrong, Nov. 11

» Ohio State OG Billy Price vs. Michigan DT Rashan Gary, Nov. 25

» Ole Miss OT Greg Little vs. LSU DE Arden Key, Oct. 21

» Oklahoma State WR James Washington vs. Oklahoma CB Jordan Thomas, Nov. 4

» Clemson OT Mitch Hyatt vs. Boston College DE Harold Landry, Sept. 23

90. Your college football Labor Day treat: Georgia Tech vs. Tennessee on Sept. 4. And you'd better believe UT will spend more than just game week working on defending the triple-option offense.

91. Breakout star on offense: A.J. Brown, WR, Ole Miss.

92. Breakout star on defense: Garrett Dooley, LB, Wisconsin.

93. Breakout star as return specialist: KaVontae Turpin, WR, TCU.

94. Boise State QB Brett Rypien, the nephew of former Redskins QB Mark Rypien, is a healthy season away from 10,000 career passing yards.

95. What will Baylor football look like under Matt Rhule?

96. If Nick is the only Chubb you've seen in college football, get to know N.C. State's Bradley (they're cousins). He notched 10.5 sacks last year, including three vs. Notre Dame.

97. Former Texas A&M QB Kyle Allen taking over for Greg Ward at Houston, just 100 miles from the school he walked away from.

98. Can five-star freshman RB Cam Akers take over for Dalvin Cook as FSU's top rusher, or does Jimbo Fisher go with the bigger, more powerful veteran, Jacques Patrick?

99. Army-Navy. The Black Knights have Navy's attention now after snapping a 14-game series losing streak last year.

100. UAB football is back. Two years after the school canceled the program and its players scattered as transfers, the Blazers will return to action.
