BV maybe a Beta, Lebby’s offense is more gimmicky, and no identity with one game to go

BV a beta? - let me be clear, I love BV but he seems more like an asst in the interim HC role than a true HC. I don’t know if he even fought for his team during tonight‘s calls. It’s something that might be stupid to call out, but is kind of a microcosm of how a HC is aware of the ebbs and flows of a game and uses those moments to create some level of spark or advantage. It’s like the old BV who had fire in his belly is gone and we got the version that did self care and counseling at the med spa. The players love him, which is clear, but are they pushed by him to really be better?

Lebby’s Offense is gimmicky - It’s doesn’t scare opponents and is definitely more “horizontal” than down the field. Tonight was a rarity and it didn’t even take full advantage of what TT was giving us the whole game. We also inject trick Plays at the weirdest times that don’t seem to need it. We don’t have the physicality of previous offense’s or dominate in any aspect of the offensive scheme, even with this year’s occasional explosive pass plays. We put too much pressure on 2nd downs with little or no gains on 1st because of this crappy horizontal short pass to the WR on the outside that often nets little or negative yards. It’s a far cry from our downhill running offensive identity with Riley or the creative nuances/plays that he created out of the standard formation and personnel. The hurry up needs more balance and situational awareness without blindly just running a play quickly on 2nd and 10 just because that’s who we are. That is what teams with less talent have to do (Tech and old Baylor) vs teams with talent that should be able to impose their will. Would love to get back to the latter. Bob made Riley’s air raid offense more balance by demanding a physical running game while keeping the vertical passing threat, IMO. That built an offense that both elite QBs AND RB’s wanted to play in and did for us (Murray, Mixon, Hurts, Perine, Anderson).

Overall, this team has no identity. They aren’t physically imposing, and they aren’t high-octane offense that put up a ton of points and creates fear and pressure consistently. They literally have no leaders who will set the tone on either side of the ball where the other players want to follow. It‘s like the only consistent thing that BV and the coaching staff did this season was how to make the players feel good about working, but didn’t seem to hold them accountable to outcomes. In the business world, this kind of leader is trying to be friends with his employees so they like him, which they do. But they don’t necessarily perform well or even respect what’s asked of them because there aren’t really any consequences for bad performance. This is the worst thing that could happen to us because the culture, if not addressed, leads to acceptable mediocrity.

Sorry for the long-winded thoughts but this season hasn’t seen growth like we hoped and the team seems to be languishing more than building. I am sure I’m wrong about my observations but I think there’s at least some consideration for these points with the performance we are seeing.

Audible??

Now that we have a full regular season behind us, has anyone else noticed how little we checked into a different play depending on the defensive alignment? Lebby is in the box and should be checking into plays that give us the best opportunity given the defensive look. Tempo a lot of times kills the opportunities for audibles. Disclaimer: I’m not saying we lost last night bc of this, offense put up enough points to win that game.

Missed holding calls…

Downs just got raped by that entire left side of their line on that long pass play… and no flag.

This has gotten to the point of being completely comedic. Fvcking insane that BV hasn’t raised more of a stink about this - but I do get it since he doesn’t want to appear like he’s making excuses in his first season… it’s just that these excuses are EXTREMELY valid.

I gotta say

This is the worst coached OU team that I’ve seen since the 90’s. BV’s defense is the same shit show that it was when he left the first time. Lebby…he’s atrocious. WTF was that dumbass trick play on a short field??? This class will fall apart and the rebuild will take years buried in the SEC. Better hope BV can build through the portal.
I know I expected too much this year, but this has been a damn embarrassment.

As pissed as everyone but…

I believe in recruiting and some time to fix a defenseless defense for the last 12 yrs. Venables defense isn’t for the average players. We bitched about it his last couple yrs at OU before being moved to Clemson. How did his defense become elite at Clemson you ask? It took him several yrs before he got his guys and they dominated. How many of you bitched back then about his defense being too complicated back then? Give him some time! If not FY

I would love to know

How many holding penalties OU forced on opponents during conference play, and then what the average was across the league… willing to be this stat is a borderline war crime.

Literally saw one of our guys get held last night as their QB rolled out, the ref saw it, reached down to grab his flag, and then just ate it after he realized which team was on O

Did Brent ever want to be a Head Coach?

Disclaimer- I’m all in on Brent and he needs at least three years.

I don’t think there is anyone on earth that cares more about OU and that he is going to do all he can to right this ship and get us to #8.

The reason I’m asking the question is because it doesn’t seem like he’s picked anything up from Bob or Dabo when it comes to managing any in-game situations.

That’s all been stated, but I’m really wondering if he’s invested the time to learn how to manage these things so that when he gets that HC job that he’s got a feel for it or if he’s had his head down with the defense the whole time.

In business (sales for example) you’ve got folks that want to be the most badass individual contributor they can be and make a shit ton of money being the best. You’ve got others that want to be the best and also want to move into leadership and do the things to prepare for that move.

The dude is a brilliant defensive coordinator. I just wonder if Joe C forced his hand on a job he never knew he wanted/never expected to get or if he was always preparing for a top profile HC job.

Right now we’ve got a bunch of bright, young assistant coaches, Brent, and then an older def coordinator figurehead that wasn’t successful at previous stops.

It’s completely disjointed and worse- no one is willing to get in Brent’s ear.
Was there anyone that said anything or spoke up while Lebby was trying to blow the OSU game?

I’ve never seen a team struggle with substitution rules and we’ve had it 2-3 times where we’ve almost cost a delay of game (or did).

This is just one of 8-10 things throughout a game that look off…even to a regular guy that’s just watched a bunch of football. And it’s costing us games.

I wonder if Brent’s ceiling is higher than say a Rhule or a Dykes, but his floor is lower.

We’re rebuilding it having taken it down to the studs and we have a head coach and staff that is learning on the job.

🤮

Coaching Observation Question

I understand getting the best players on the field, but I’m just curious why Billy Bowman & Marvin Mims have been returners on ST. Is it worth a few yards to have your starting safety out half the season for a KR? We have seen the huge difference it makes not to have #5. Also, maybe this one’s out there but I wouldn’t put Mims on PR, he’s too valuable.
I’m optimistic about the future but this is something that makes no sense to me & it’s on my list of top 5 complaints about this staff. It goes along with not running the clock down while up in Bedlam. Like I said I try to stay optimistic and believe in the future of this team! Just wanted to know your thoughts. BEAT TECH! BOOMER SOONER!

Best defensive player this year?

Honestly, did OU have a single player on defense that was better than a “C” this year?

I guess I’d give the defensive MVP to Coldon who only played 5 games. The entire defense was awful for most of the year and they have been for 10 years. These $hitty performers is who TBOW left the current staff with for this year. Safety play was beyond embarrassing tonight.

Also, not a single f@cking holding call again. 750 plays against our defense and there have been 2 total holds called in our favor.
